Summary of the Article

In the article Development of gender labeling: Effect of age of pictured children, Etaugh et al. consider the relationship between gender discrimination and age. Undoubtedly, gender studies are quite relevant at present, and this paper is dedicated to a particular issue: it notes the changes in perception of gender with age. The article is devoted to the study of gender perception among toddlers. The authors describe an experiment conducted with 52 people who were shown pairs of photographs of boys and girls. The subjects had to point to the required target (boy or girl). According to the study, children become able to discriminate between gender at about 29 months of age accurately. In addition, the age of the people depicted did not affect the respondents’ answers and their ability to distinguish between gender. Thus, the researchers proved that toddlers’ gender discrimination improved by age.

Reaction to the Article

The authors use ethos for the most significant impact on the audience. They emphasize the morality of the issue, taking the position of the need to eradicate discrimination at an early age. Regarding pathos, this article is scientific and serious; therefore, it is written in an appropriate strict and clear tone. The logos of an article is its primary way of influencing readers, helping to reflect the study’s main content and describe the conclusions drawn. This article is valuable for contemporary research on gender issues. Now, people have many ways to identify themselves, and it becomes more difficult to distinguish between them. However, under the influence of society, children acquire specific rules of gender discrimination. Interestingly, the ability to discriminate between genders arises around the age of two years. This means that even at the initial stages of life, it is possible to instill in people a respectful and open-minded attitude towards others.
