Discrimination can be referred to as treating people unequally based on race, gender, or religion. Though it is felt just as a figure of other people’s imagination, individuals are either faced or engaged in discrimination while unconscious about it. It can result in significant adverse effects such as disempowerment, low self-esteem, limited opportunities, social cohesion, and violence. These effects facilitate the ability or inability of an individual to overcome it. It is ethically wrong to draw hasty conclusions from unfamiliar with other cultures.
The people’s perspective towards Muslims in the United States has turned to hatred in the 21st century. These Muslims, in turn, face risk and discrimination due to their faith. The challenges of ignorance and fear faced by Islam have raised questions on whether it is a religion of peace or war. These questions led Ragel Omar, a Somali-born British reporter, to find out the state of the Muslims in the United States (Al Jazeera, 2018). Regardless of faith or race, America should be a free state, a place for everyone. Being a minority among the population, many American Muslims have faced hostility, suspicion, and doubt over them being Americans. As a way to fight back against prejudice, they have fixed out new places for themselves. Today in the United States, Muslim communities are played along by some ethnic rigidities. They have been in the streets condemning racism, demanding racial and identity equity among them and the treatment of Black Muslims. The pain they undergo while interacting with the world is quite disheartening. Muslim’s fear should be removed by showing a balanced view of Muslim civilization.
As a society, it is our responsibility to enlighten others on eradicating discrimination and oppression. The more we continue to privilege ourselves, which may be due to color or religion, the more we oppress others. I have encountered it as a victim and an antagonist even though I was unaware of its happening. In my lower grades, I faced age discrimination, which taught me its pains. I used to think being among the majority meant I was superior. Belonging to the majority provided me with various social and economic benefits. However, since I joined college, I have learned that every person is essential, and we are all equal. Despite our different cultures, every person deserves good treatment.
It is against the law for someone to be limited to freedom just because of their religion. The American law on temporarily barring the entry of travelers from Muslim countries was another sign of discrimination. The Americans probably viewed the Islam religion to be connected with violence. This assumption might be only a misunderstanding from research; non-Muslims cause many terrorist attacks. Lack of respect and acknowledgment in America has been portrayed. As age and education levels increase, people tend to increase their familiarity with Muslims. The thought that American Muslims are anti-American is wrong. The outreach educators’ work on informing the masses about American Muslims is vital to unity in the United States today. The media has also played a significant role in fostering equality through the various positivity documentaries.
It is ethically wrong to draw hasty conclusions from unfamiliar with other cultures. Deciding to follow the Islam religion as an American should not be scowled. The majority of Americans fail to understand the occupants of Islam and yet blame them for terror, which does not result from them. Before making a wrong generalization to a particular culture, we should first familiarize ourselves with the culture. We should teach the reality of different cultures to generations to better future lives.
