Five Rs of Change and Decision-Making

Identifying and Explaining the Five Rs

Changes and decisions are mandatory in every healthcare organization. Such changes can transform the behaviors, practices, and roles of different caregivers. The five Rs are therefore critical towards promoting change and making appropriate health decisions. The concept of reengineering focuses on appropriate practices and managerial strategies that can deliver positive results. Health facilities might acquire modern information systems in order to improve the level of performance (Al-Mamary, Shamsuddin, & Aziati, 2013). The second concept is redesigning. The workforce can be redesigned by availing new resources in order to achieve the best outcomes.

Re-regulation is another approach aimed at implementing better values and policies. For example, a facility can embrace various nursing terminologies in order to support its workers. The fourth concept is known as rightsizing. Health Leaders (HLs) can dismiss a few practitioners in order to reduce operations costs. The facility can also rearrange the top-most management structure. Such practices are done in order to deliver quality nursing care. The other approach is restructuring. The concept of restructuring focuses on the nature of nursing education. The concept encourages institutions to embrace evidence-based practices in order to implement better nursing practices (Curtis, Vries, & Sheerin, 2011). Many healthcare facilities also encourage their workers to engage in lifelong learning. The approach has reshaped the nature of nursing practice.

Rightsizing

The concept of rightsizing is widely used in different healthcare organizations. Rightsizing can be a useful decision whenever an institution seeks to reduce costs and wastes. Some caregivers might not be supporting the goals of the facility (Hutton, 2011). This decision will ensure the facility retains the right number of competent practitioners. Such caregivers will offer quality medical services. The institution can also streamline the roles of its top managers. Rightsizing can also be an inappropriate decision in an organization. The approach can reduce the number of caregivers thus resulting in shortage (Hutton, 2011). The existing nurses will have to work for more hours. New problems such as burnout, job dissatisfaction, and powerlessness will emerge. Rightsizing should therefore be done cautiously.
