Health Care Outcomes for Latinos in Delaware

In Delaware, majority of the people are Latino, one out of three kids is Latino and one out of 31 adults is also Latino. However, most of the population this community is marginalized (Salud America, 2019). Latino face disparities in physical health, parental care and mental health where depression is common due to high rate of asthma in parents which makes many children live in poverty among other things as evident in the table below;

Physical health, Primary and Parental care

Latinos’ cancer and asthma risk are primarily associated with toxic exposure, 34.01 per a million people and the rate ranges from 60.76 and 30.84 in one census. Statistics also indicate that this is due to hazardous conditions of work, and only 20.30% are insured, which makes Latino highly susceptible to injury and lack medical access (Salud America, 2019). In addition, the hazard index score for the county is 0.42 which is just 1.8 shy away from adverse health effects Latino children also lack access to primary parental care such as food, which is why more than 12.6 percentage of people are receiving snap food (Salud America, 2019). This is because majority of Latino live away from the market, accounting for 12.30% of food insecure people.

Health advocates Role in advocating Marginalization of issues facing Latinos

Health advocates have a role in raising voices to ensure that communities influence policymaking in matters affecting their health and wellbeing. Using a health equity card, the advocates can air Latinos’ marginalization health issues, as evident from the tables above. They can advocate for policies that will increase funds for SNAP benefits since most families are in poverty (Community catalyst, 2019). In addition, health insurance for companies that employ Latinos will help reduce the high Asthma rates. The advocates can also address funds that increase mental health workers since most of the affected people are Latino.
