John Updike: Biography and Works

Introduction

The United States of America, being a home for people of different ethnic and religious affiliations, gender, and social class, has always been one of the major themes for various authors. America was one of the main characters in the works of both born and raised American writers, as well as the ones who came there in pursuit of happiness. However, when speaking of the creative variety surrounding the concept, one may notice that only those with extraordinary stories can be singled out from the glue.

Main body

On the contrary, John Updike was a heterosexual white male in the world that explicitly awarded this group’s opportunities and dignity. Being an inherently “privileged” American resident, Updike had a minor chance of becoming an outstanding creator unless he started to bring up topics that mattered for society at the time. However, it is the unwillingness to be someone he was not that made Updike a person people paid attention to see American life through his prism.

The author’s works were mostly focused on the peculiarities of life of the small-town middle classes who were trying to leave their mark on the American land. However, while the vast majority of writers at the time desperately waited for this trail to be significant enough for the generations to come, Updike’s ambitions concerned the maximum one might achieve throughout the time spent on Earth. While sounding like an oxymoron, it is the mediocracy that made the man special in the world where everyone wanted to stand out.

Conclusion

While many people believe that the world literary heritage is replete with white privilege examples, it is the universal respect that matters the most and puts fellow Americans like John Updike at the advantage of being heard.
