Eastern Woodland is one of several regions in North America, where Indigenous people reside. In this area, there are two groups of people — Iroquoian and Algonquian. The main difference between the two is their language. These people are recognized for their culture and religion, including the beadwork and quillwork. Moreover, in some regions, tattoos are common, as a way of expressing one’s heritage. The Haudenosaunee people are known for their “False Face Society” culture. They create masks from wood and decorate them with metal and horsehair. The maks are often used for ceremonial purposes and in different medical rituals that are designed for the healing of diseases. Considering these religion-based traditions, many Tribes of Indigenous people have shamans or people who are responsible for different rituals. Contemporary Indigenous people of the Eastern Woodland are activists and advocates for the rights of the Indigenous communities.
Another area where Indigneous people reside is The Great Basin. It is the land located between the Rocky Mountains and Nevada. The Indigenous people in the Great Basin are Washoe, who speak Hokan, although there are some tribes who speak Uto-Aztecan language as well. Historically, these people were hunters or gatherers, meaning that they had to travel from one place to another to find food. Women typically gather berries, seeds, and wild root vegetables while men hunt. Fishing was the most common in this region, and Indigenous people in this region were the first ones to create canoes to help them fish. The location of the Basin allowed the tribes to create a trade network, which allowed the Indigenous people to sell and buy horses or food. Some of the contemporary Indigenous people in the Great Basin continue to live in reservations and practice the traditions of their ancestors.
