‘The use of telecommunications device while operating a moving motor vehicle’ statute prohibits motorists from using telecommunication devices while driving to type emails or text messages, transmit texts or emails, and to read texts or mail messages. The law does not allow the use of any device in a moving motor unless they are used in reporting an emergency to 911 or free-hand voice-operated systems.
The law has enabled me to know my limits in using communication devices while driving. Consequently, I have known the offenses associated with breaking this law and its legal implications. I have also known my rights while using electronic devices.
The law has brought with its a negative impact on business in Indiana. Entrepreneurs and managers today use any available opportunity to reach their stakeholders through electronics. With the ban over communication through electronics, most businessmen cannot reach their customers in time or place orders as required especially when formal response such as mail is required.
The law is criminal law. While texting or mailing is not a criminal offense, what it causes such as a driver knocking a pedestrian or another motorist is considered a criminal offense. As such, it is treated as a secondary law against adults. There is hope that the law will become a federal law following the huge support the federal government is putting on it.
Following past road accident trends, the law is vital in curbing road carnage. The law will ensure fewer accidents on Indiana roads. The application of electronic devices has not only caused deaths to drivers but even their families and third parties. Once the law is successfully implemented, a dramatic reduction in road accidents is expected.
