Medicare: Choosing a Healthcare Facility Based on Quality and Safety

Medicare’s official website contains sets of different types of information with a focus on Medicare programs. The database of this agency also includes data helping people to choose the most appropriate healthcare facility (Medicare.gov, n.d.). Such variables as available services, sufficient staffing, and social components are highlighted as primary aspects to consider when choosing a nursing home (Medicare.gov, 2019). Based on these recommendations, it is possible to understand the central elements of patient safety as seen by the agency. The range of offered services is one of the pillars of patient safety as the elderly have specific needs that should be addressed. Staffing is another critical element of patient safety as patients need a particular amount of attention and care to maintain their health status or improve it. Nurses are central figures in this process as they are in the closest contact with patients. Importantly, social aspects are also mentioned as the elderly need to remain in contact with different people to ensure their physical, mental, and emotional states are satisfactory.

Although it may seem that such guidelines can be helpful for patients and their families, healthcare professionals can also benefit from reviewing them. Practitioners will stay up to date regarding their patients’ expectations, so they will be able to meet their needs more effectively. The understanding of patients’ expectations and available resources and services makes communication between stakeholders more effective. The focus on the three variables mentioned above will help nurses (and other professionals) to pay attention to the most meaningful areas and facets of care. Importantly, nurses should constantly try to advocate for improving patient safety and care quality, which will be eventually reflected in updated guidelines.
