Personal Information of Patient Protection

NCSBN brochure preview describes the common myths and misunderstandings of social media. The most surprising misinterpretation is the acceptance to discuss or refer to the patient when they are not identified by name but use a room number, nickname, condition, or diagnosis. The article argues that this belief is a breach of patient’s confidentiality privacy (“A Nurse’s Guide to the Use of Social Media | NCSBN”, 2018). It is believed that the right to secrecy when using social media is still maintained when a patient is not identified by name. From the brochure, it is understood that posting patients’ information on social media platforms breaches their confidentiality, and practitioners need to get a patient’s consent before sharing any information about them on social media platforms.

I will use different strategies in the workplace ensure patient confidentiality. One method that I will use involves adhering to workplace privacy and security policies in protecting the privacy of patients. When I follow these regulations, I will be guided on all the factors that I need to maintain the data of the patients’ privacy. Understanding workplace regulations and complying with HIPAA rules and standards will reduce cases of a patient information breach.

A nurse needs to understand the personal information about a patient they need to protect. Additionally, practitioners should determine when such information can be shared and learn how to implement reasonable strategies to limit privacy breach incidents and pitfalls that could occur when sharing patient data (“A Nurse’s Guide to the Use of Social Media | NCSBN”, 2018). In the processes, a nurse will learn strategies that will ensure that they keep any information on a patient from the public eye. Practitioners need to learn that social media is not private, and when information is shared on such platforms, it implies a breach of patients’ privacy.
