Introduction
Having a resume that stands out from hundreds of others is important for a successful career. In the article “Resume makeover,” Krista (2019) focuses on the main strategies of changing a resume to make it impressive and to ensure that it accurately highlights one’s skills and competencies. Apart from general information about the qualifications and skills, one must indicate why they will become a valuable asset to this particular organization.
Although it is vital to include essential information about the professional qualifications, such as a nursing license number and a degree, sometimes work, or education in a non-medical field can become a candidate’s advantage. Notably, Krista (2019) recommends including non-medical degrees in the resume as well since “they speak to your diversity and breadth of knowledge” (p. 68). Resumes have to be concise, including only the information that highlights why one is a suitable candidate for the job is essential. When sending a resume for a particular position, it is important to ensure that it is “tailored to the specific position” (Krista, 2019, p. 69). One should tailor the resume based on the requirements of the employer. However, it is essential to remain honest while doing so.
Impact of Assigned Article Content on Future Practice
This article helped me understand the importance of a resume in the context of professional development. For example, prior to reading this article, I assumed that having identical resumes and sending them to different employers is a good approach. Now I know that it is better to carefully study the description of a position and change the resume to highlight the skills and qualifications that will be relevant for this particular job.
This article helped me understand how even highly qualified people may struggle to find a job because their resumes do not reflect their knowledge and skill since the recruiters have to look through hundreds of identical resumes each day. Moreover, being concise in a resume is essential, and there should be a balance of providing all relevant information and adhering to the limit of one or two pages. Therefore, this article helped me review my approach to creating a professional resume.
