Southern Style, Dark Humour in the Everyday Life

To begin with, the presented part of the author’s work is one of the most common illustrations of Southern style and dark humor theory applied to practice. Interestingly, the author described a wide range of words that were the enforcing part of the creator’s Southern style, which was possible to understand and distinguish from the overall text. The text was written informally and descriptively. The author successfully transmits the general atmosphere in the quarter, the “event program” for the family member’s joint time passing. This essay will present the types of southern style, dark humor, and why the author had chosen to write in this style.

First and foremost, the main elements that illustrate the usage of the southern style are the author’s description of watering the backyard’s grass by hoses. The whole process was described in a detailed way. However, the distinguishing feature of the Southern genre was used: the weird details, related in the form of desire and temper illustration, giving the detailed presentation of the specific objects. Moreover, the urination process of grown children represents the wish to not only describe generally accepted processes but also illustrate strange details, such as children’s feelings to relax.

On the other hand, the dark humor was not included in the text too many times, but some of the most important “dark jokes” were made with serious intentions due to the fact that they describe the lifestyle issues of people who did not succeed in life. When describing his final scene of sitting on the grass with parents and relatives, James Agee provided the reader with the expression “living at home” which meant that they cannot afford themselves going somewhere. At the same time, the dark humor was not disclosed openly owing to the atmosphere and the style of writing. The work is made in the Southern genre because the author used unusual, sentimental, and weird expressions that helped him to describe the atmosphere of the home. Moreover, he was illustrating unfamiliar situations for book readers, but realistic enough for those who live there for life.
