State of the Commonwealth Address Summary

Governor Deval L. Patrick the governor of Massachusetts addressed the state of the commonwealth on the 21st of January 2010 and thanked the military, Pastor Laguerre, and volunteers in Haiti from Massachusetts aiding the afflicted. He also thanked the candidate of the special election for a good campaign, Scott Brown for promising to work with him and the people of the commonwealth for upholding democracy by voting. When he has sworn in three years ago he had a vision for a better and stronger commonwealth where there existed good jobs and wages, improved education, and a sense of communal belonging.

According to him, the challenges were emigration of the youth due to lack of jobs, poor education standards, lack of health care, and resistance to change and outsiders. These challenges were confronted due to the need for a better and stronger commonwealth.

The process was obstructed by former and current leadership practices together with the collapse of the economy. This led to a $9 billion budget deficit resulting in job cuts, and stalling of programs resulting in the need for change. He said that these effects increased his determination for people who were losing jobs, homes, retirement benefits, and hope. Parents and children alike are worried about the welfare of one another. Though there was a need for jobs to ensure survival, the vision helped keep the faith and kept them going.

By personalizing problems and working together, there was an understanding of the effects of the deficit which needed to be covered through better and efficient methods in service delivery. Control of learning institutions and investment in innovation together with health care and unemployment benefits have helped these families. Working and creating jobs has also improved their livelihood. Moreover, reliable access to all healthcare was instituted and premiums cut.

Public schools were funded and will be fully funded next year. The education reform bill was signed allowing for more schools in the communities. He said that the fruits of their commitment could be shown by the increase in immigration, business confidence, home sales, and state credit rating. Education improved and the commonwealth was leading in health care coverage. Clean sources of energy were in the national status with wind and solar power set to improve.

According to the governor, that would lead to a revival of stalled projects and the creation of more jobs hence better living standards. Locals and working immigrants would be covered, there would be saved through improved transportation networks and improved education. He said that investing in people through employment, insurance, ethical representation, crime reduction, efficiency, and cooperation between different agencies were the way forward, and working on them together as a team by cooperating with other people should be initiated.

Deval, in his speech, is trying to guide the people of Massachusetts towards a targeted end which is the improvement of the lives of the people through recovery from the recession. He makes policies and ensures they are followed as seen in his former speeches. This helps to show the people he is serving the path through which the changes will take hence making them pliable to change when it actually comes. His concept of joining the communities through cooperation aims at making the societal goals personal hence the need to fulfill them is increased.
