One of the interview series that I enjoy is BBC Radio 1 film interviews with Ali Plumb. One of my favorites is the interview with Martin Scorsese, filmed as a part of a promotion for Scorsese’s film The Irishman (BBC Radio 1, 2019). What I like most about this interview is that as a film critic, the interviewer has enough knowledge and respect for the filming industry, which lets him interact naturally with actors and directors. Most answers to Plumb’s questions are researched beforehand; however, he sets the conversation in a way that the guest would be able to tell the answer themselves. Plumb is a good listener; although his face is rarely seen in the interviews, his guests are always connected with him through eye contact and visual expressions.
Although there is not much involved in terms of sound design, the sound quality of the interview itself is high. The inserts with segments from films help to emphasize some questions and provide additional context. Moreover, the inserts allow separation of the interview into logical parts that help to avoid the monotonous character of the conversation. In general, I think that sound design helps accentuate important points in storytelling, such as adding the emotional component, and helps to convey the information and message to the listener.
