The Reflection on the Passage of Kenneth Boyd

This passage is very relevant in the era of a pandemic when the world is still adjusting to new conditions. Delivery has become one of the most popular services where people can receive purchases and earn money by delivering them to others. It can be a real salvation for those who have lost jobs in a pandemic crisis and require additional financial sources. However, any system has its drawbacks, and in the case of Instacart, this is an unfair assessment and funding of employees’ activities.

Kenneth Boyd describes in his post how the retail company Instacart operates within the current circumstances. He mentions several well-reasoned facts against the established system ironically directed against its employees. The company views the labor solely through the prism of a special app where the client evaluates services. Most often, such an assessment is very subjective and has an unreasonably large impact on the finances of the employee. The author accurately states that a couple of broken eggs and a bad mood of the client can cost the worker all the credit. However, these credits are necessary for a more or less sufficient income and for improving the rating for further orders. Any small mistake or insignificant whim of the customer has the potential to shatter all the long time of hard work. This approach to assessing human labor is overly alarming and requires a comprehensive, timely rethinking.

This message turned out to be especially convincing and useful for comprehending the current situation in the service market. Some companies take advantage of their position and deliberately assess the quality of employees’ work as unreasonably low, tying subjective opinion to financial payments. In such a reality, the best solution may be to support these workers with high ratings in the app. A crumpled loaf of bread is not worth months of somebody’s hard work.
