Introduction
Both action research and traditional research involve collecting and analyzing data to consider a specific problem. However, these two types have several key differences in their approaches. Traditional research focuses on testing a particular theory or studying a phenomenon. Action research aims to address a specific problem in a certain context, for example, the business environment (Shani & Coghlan, 2021).
Additionally, researchers in traditional research are typically not involved in the problem; they observe a phenomenon from a distance. In action, research researchers are influenced by the problem or work actively with people affected to resolve it.
Action Research in Business
Businesses might choose to implement an action research approach rather than a traditional research approach because action research focuses on solving real-world problems. It aims to make practical decisions based on the present situation, which might help businesses develop effective strategies. Action research is proper when a company needs to find a way to overcome challenges quickly, as it helps to address immediate circumstances.
For example, a company may have difficulties promoting innovative behaviors among its employees. Using traditional research, the business may collect data on motivation and innovative behavior and study different approaches to maintain it. This will help them identify the root cause of the problem in general and develop a long-term strategy. However, using action research will help the company work directly with employees in order to identify the causes of the issue. Interviews and surveys can be used in order to determine the reasons for the lack of innovative behavior and develop a solution that would be currency the best for the company.
Conclusion
Overall, I agree with the idea that the choice of research type should be based on a specific problem that a company has. Traditional research may be more effective if a business needs to develop a change plan or transform its strategic approach. Action research can help a company address immediate problems that require quick but informed decision-making. Companies might also use various techniques to solve the most complex issues, depending on the context.
