Addressing Gender Inequality in Marriage: A Social Psychology Perspective and Project Proposal

Explanation of the Social Issue

Currently, there are numerous efforts to establish a society with equal opportunities for both men and women. That is why there is a continuous process of balancing the rights of the two sexes (Blossfeld & Kiernan, 2019). However, females still suffer from biased attitudes and inequality. For this reason, the selected social issue is linked to the current status of women in marriage and its improvement. The statistics indicate that males benefit from the availability of better jobs and higher salaries, while females face numerous barriers and struggle to compete with men (Bredbenner, 2018). For this reason, there is a particular social issue that affects married women and requires targeted attention to promote equality.

Furthermore, in many cases, women might ask for help because of the discrimination. Females call support lines to complain about inequality or being discriminated against (Bredbenner, 2018). The lack of support, respect, and opportunities for professional and personal growth are fundamental aspects affecting this cohort (Bredbenner, 2018). For this reason, the issue of the current status of women in marriage remains a pressing concern. The possible interventions involve offering free education programs to help women enhance their knowledge and engage in activities that foster their independence.

Moreover, workplace policies should be revised to ensure that more women are included and provided with opportunities to advance their careers. Ultimately, the media can play a crucial role in addressing the social issue and achieving significant progress in its resolution. Altogether, the vulnerable and unequal position of women in marriage is one of the critical social issues existing at the moment. They suffer from the lack of access to resources and opportunities available to men. For this reason, the problem should be discussed to find an appropriate solution.

Connection to Social Psychology

The selected issue can also be explored in terms of social psychology and related concepts. Thus, the alteration of married women’s status and its improvement requires a radical change in the social norms existing at the moment. There are numerous definitions of the term because of its scope and significance.

Thus, social norms can be described as the beliefs people hold about what individuals belonging to a particular group or society consider acceptable (Shakya et al., 2022). It influences people’s behavior within specific communities and the extent to which these actions are endorsed by others (Shakya et al., 2022). Thus, to remain part of a specific group, an individual must obey the dominant rules and accept social norms; otherwise, there is a high risk of being excluded or facing additional pressure.

The concept is directly connected to the project and the planned change. Although numerous attempts are made to reconsider existing stereotypes within society, many biased attitudes persist. For this reason, following the dominant social norm, females are considered homemakers with primary duties, including caring for children and supporting their husbands (Bredbenner, 2018). It impacts their position in the marriage and their access to resources or opportunities to find a good and well-paid job.

The positive change linked to the problem requires addressing the existing social norm and its reconsideration to ensure that the perspective on the role of women is changed and becomes more tolerant. The problem is that social norms might differ between men and women, and they can have various visions of how partners should behave in marriage (Shakya et al., 2022). For this reason, changing social norms is the central aspect of the project, and the concept is central to the discussed problematic topic.

Strategy and Project Proposal

Rationale

In this way, the proposed project focuses on addressing the issue of women’s status in marriage and its improvement. As stated previously, women are financially less self-sufficient, receive less training, and have fewer opportunities to find good jobs than men (Bredbenner, 2018). For this reason, they might feel unhappy and experience psychological stress. Thus, the proposed project is designed to help married women who suffer from the pressure of existing social norms and the lack of opportunities to find well-paid jobs, thereby becoming self-sufficient and financially independent. The project will be conducted within the selected cohort using the Internet and available social media platforms. Training for women and psychological support may be provided online, while existing social media can be utilized to create a new vision and promote the alteration of current social norms.

Goals and Objectives

The project aims to attain several vital goals necessary for positive social change. The outcome is the improvement of the social status of married women, enabling them to become more financially self-sufficient. This is the central purpose of the proposed intervention and incentive.

At the same time, several other essential objectives should also be achieved. First, increased awareness about the need for change and women’s rights should be cultivated. It is essential to provide additional training for all participants to guarantee they have chances to find a good job and earn the money necessary for increased independence levels. The given goals are central to the proposed project as they will contribute to the radical improvement in the status of married women and their transformation into equal partners who have the same rights as males or their husbands.

Components

Considering the goals outlined above, the project will entail specific elements. First, free education programs are necessary to enhance women’s knowledge and ensure they are equipped to secure new jobs and earn a sufficient income. It will help to become more qualified and compete with men to acquire similar positions. Second, it is essential to revise workplace policies to ensure that women feel protected and have equal opportunities for career advancement.

Ultimately, the project involves providing support services to women when they need them. These include psychological support offered when a female feels depressed or vulnerable, offering jobs, educational programs, or training, depending on the current challenges existing within marriage. The given actions would promote positive change and lead to a reconsideration of the position of women in families.

Summary

Altogether, the proposed project addresses a significant social issue. Currently, married women may face limited access to resources that are typically available to men. These include training, job, salaries, and qualifications necessary for being engaged in social processes and playing an active role in them. The problem is closely linked to the concept of social norms, which determine acceptable behaviors and outline how women in marriage are expected to act. The main incentive’s goals are to empower women, make them financially self-sufficient, and provide the support necessary for them to become more independent and compete with men on various levels. It is expected that the project will have a positive impact on married women who feel depressed or discriminated.
