An Issue of Maternal Mortality

Maternal mortality had been an essential issue for various independent researchers and organizations. The 2019 report by WHO has addressed the global maternal mortality problem. The organization argues that most women that die during childbirth live in developing counties. Moreover, they die from preventable causes; therefore, the world needs to mobilize and contribute to the fight against maternal mortality (WHO, 2019). The WHO provides statistics on the issue throughout the years. Their evidence highlights the regions most affected by the issue, the number of causes contributing to the problem, and potential solutions. The strategies that they use are data gathering and statistical analysis. Moreover, they study global trends and combine the results into one coherent report.

The WHO does not provide information about any particular author that contributed to the analysis. However, the WHO is a reputable organization that is famous around the globe for its contributions to health-related research. The WHO has experience producing comprehensive reports on the essential medical dangers, as other healthcare professionals and development specialists use their studies. Therefore, the statistics and analysis provided by them can be considered reliable. This report is essential for my research because it helps me to learn more about the most affected regions and understand the causes contributing to the issue. Lastly, the analysis helps me to consider the possible actions that can be taken to battle maternal mortality. Overall, this article is convincing, and I agree with the WHO’s arguments because it has resources to access and systemize data available worldwide. Therefore, the statistics and solutions provided by their authors can be considered trustworthy.

Moreover, different studies contributed to the understanding of maternal mortality issues in the United States. In the study conducted by MacDorman et al. (2016), the researchers provide a cohesive overview of the United States maternal mortality rates between 2000 and 2014. Their findings determine that the mortality rate has increased by over twenty-five percent for forty-eight states and Washington, DC. However, their main argument is that the addition of pregnancy question format to the U.S. official death certificate in 2003 improved the assessment of maternal deaths. Moreover, the postponed adoption of this issue led to incompatibilities and prevented proper trend interpretation. The evidence used by the authors is the estimated maternal mortality rate from 18.8 in 2000 to 23.8 in 2014, which presents a drastic increase (MacDorman et al., 2016). However, the researchers acknowledged that the rise is connected to the measurement system’s change. Contemporary mortality reporting procedures have improved, which led to an increase. The strategies used by the author was the analysis of statistical data of maternal mortality in various U.S. states. Correction factors were developed to adjust data from before the standard pregnancy question was adopted.

The authors of the research are credible, as the title page of the study provides the professional qualifications of every contributor. Overall, all individuals involved in the study have Ph.D. and are professors in various universities. Moreover, the article is pre-reviewed, as other professionals evaluated its quality before it was published. This study is crucial for my research because it helps me understand the maternal mortality rates in the United States coherently. Thus, comprehending the statistics is vital while researching a topic. Lastly, I am convinced by the arguments in the research, as authors provided statistics around the world with mortality rates going down. However, the U.S. has been experiencing the increase; therefore, the study that adjusted the rates made the picture more comprehensible.
