Barriers to Effective Decision-Making in Organizations

Decision-making is a complicated process, and many barriers can decrease its effectiveness and lead to negative consequences for organizational performance. In addition, those barriers are often connected, meaning that the manager’s inability to overcome one of them can make another more dangerous for the company and the other way around. Managers can face such barriers as uncertainty and time constraints, but they can be reduced and coped with to increase the effectiveness of the decision-making process.

Organizations’ managers can feel a rush when they have to make decisions according to specific time constraints, and if they are uncertain of those decisions, they can confront an even more significant issue. According to Sniazhko (2019), uncertainty can often increase with time, meaning that the closer the deadline of a particular decision, the more difficult it is for the manager to make it. Those barriers can severely affect many aspects of organizational activity, including its international expansion speed, commitment level, and others (Sniazhko, 2019). However, there are several ways for decision-makers to overcome those barriers. Managers can reduce uncertainty by gathering information and networking within a decision-making team (Sniazhko, 2019). They can also cope with time constraints, remaining in control of the situation and staying flexible (Sniazhko, 2019). Collaboration and cooperation among the managers can be an efficient tool for reducing uncertainty and coping with time constraints (Sniazhko, 2019). Using those methods can significantly improve the decision-making process in organizations.

Overall, uncertainty and time constraints can be a significant problem for the company, but the managers can cope with and reduce them to improve the organizational performance. Both barriers are strongly correlated since one of them can seriously increase the other’s pressure on decision-makers. However, gathering information, networking, and staying flexible can help managers decrease uncertainty and deal with time constraints. Internal collaboration and cooperation within a managers’ team can bring vital improvements to the decision-making process.
