Clicktivism and Slacktivism in the Activism Context

Information and Communication Technologies and the Internet currently play a vital role in distributing information. Due to the active development of these phenomena, the community identifies the emergence of such concepts as slacktivism and clicktivism. These technologies are characterized by information technology to mobilize large numbers of people to support social or political action. Even though clicktivism and slacktivism are considered meaningless, they have the potential for activism that will result in social changes.

Slacktivism is the technique of expressing support for a social or political cause utilizing social networks or online petitions with minimal effort or dedication. Slacktivism’s opponents assert that it fails to contribute to a larger purpose since a limited online display of solidarity is shallow, meaningless, and acts as a replacement rather than a complement to serious forms of action. The term clicktivism is defined as using Information and Communication Technologies and the Internet to impact and manipulate public opinion or achieve social or political objectives. To my mind, although these technologies are believed to be artificial and useless, they have the potential to provoke social change through activism. In my opinion, digital communication methods allow people to find and collect a large number of people with the aim of further interactions to achieve a specific social result. The most important stage in creating social activity is the initial attraction of a large number of people, which can be realized with the help of social networks and the Internet. Activating users can improve the public dissemination of information, which should ultimately lead to a vibrant society.

To summarize, slacktivism is an approach to displaying participation in a sociopolitical issue via social media or petitions with minimal or no commitment. Clicktivism is defined as using Information and Communication Technologies and the Internet to influence public opinion or accomplish social or political goals. Clicktivism and slacktivism are digital communication tools that allow individuals to identify and gather a large number of people with the purpose of subsequent interactions to accomplish a certain social outcome.
