Introduction
People have always been interested in exploring outer space and colonizing other planets. Scientists spent years developing and testing rockets that would allow humanity to reach planets where life can be better. As indicated by Worrall (2018), experts claim that the future lies in the stars and not on the Earth. On the other hand, millions of individuals hold an opinion that these researches are unnecessary, and society should primarily focus on preserving Earth’s surroundings. Therefore, in this paper, I will share my opinion on this matter by proving that humans should colonize other planets and, at the same time, develop a sense of responsibility for the Earth’s environment.
Main body
I believe that people should invest in making other planets comfortable for living because it will help to successfully solve the problems of overpopulation and climate change. Over the decades, the world has faced various hazards, such as earthquakes and extinction cycles, which brought severe complications to people’s lives (Worrall, 2018). Individuals themselves have also contributed to the emergence of global warming, overpopulation, and nuclear proliferation (Worrall, 2018). Even though moving to other planets will not diminish all the mentioned issues, it will give a possibility to develop appropriate life conditions in outer space. Eventually, this opportunity will considerably decrease the number of Earth’s citizens and deteriorate the harmful influence of humankind on our planet.
Since philosophy largely focuses on examining the relationship between individuals and the environment, there are specific ethical considerations of branching out into space. As it was previously mentioned, nowadays, different problems, such as climate change and overpopulation, exist on our planet. Consequently, the main reason behind the colonization of other planets in the prevention of long-term influences of these issues on Earth and its population (Worrall, 2018). If some individuals are able to move to space, life on Earth will be harmonized with people having a smaller negative impact on the environment. Moreover, colonization will contribute to the support of moral values like, for example, respect towards different species, ecosystems, and natural processes (Worrall, 2018). The procedure will make people participate in the practice of preserving ecological balance and encourage them to cherish the environment.
While trying to create acceptable life conditions on other planets, people should not forget to take care of Earth. I am sure that it is our obligation to make the world a better place to live in and prevent the appearance of serious environmental problems. As suggested by Worrall (2018), the exploration of outer space should not be used as an excuse to continue polluting the planet or letting the global warning ruin nature. In addition, it will not be possible to transfer everyone to Mars or any other planet if something unexpected happens on Earth (Worrall, 2018). Hence, it is crucial to be aware that colonization is just a backup plan while the conditions on this planet should be essential for every individual.
Conclusion
Overall, the question of whether modern people should try to colonize other planets receives many distinct responses. While millions of individuals believe that establishing a life in outer space is essential, others believe that humanity should focus on preserving appropriate conditions on Earth and deal with the existing problems. In the presented essay, I shared my viewpoint by stating that humans should colonize other planets without forgetting to take responsibility for our planet’s environment.
