Community Analysis and Assessment

Introduction

The community selected for the analysis is located in Miami, Florida, in the southern United States. It contains 440,000 individuals with an average age of 39.7 years (“Miami, Florida population 2018,”2018). At first glance, the area seems prosperous. The streets are clean, with positive people moving across them. The houses are well-decorated and in good condition, with no signs of corruption or abandonment. However, it is vital to perform an in-depth assessment of and investigation to create a complete image. To collect additional information about the community, the following evaluation using two members is conducted. The results are used to conclude about the strengths and weaknesses of the community and aggregate.

Environment Assessment

The environment was assessed by using the Comprehensive Occupational and Environmental Health History tool. The two members, a 37-year-old male, and a 42-year-old female took part in the research. They both have full-time jobs working holding managerial positions in various companies. They do not report any risk exposures or problems linked to dangerous materials. Additionally, they do not have to work with hazardous materials. They also admit that their houses are safe, equipped with devices for air conditioning, and a clear water supply. In such a way, from the interview, it is possible to conclude that there are no serious environmental risks that might cause negative effects on the health of residents, and they can benefit from it.

Home Assessment

To determine the state of dwellings, the home assessment was conducted by asking the same participants. They both report the appropriate structure of their houses, with good temperature control, fire prevention systems, and violence prevention measures. The respondents are satisfied with their dwellings and admit that they are comparatively new and attractive. There are also all devices needed to prepare dishes and guarantee good nutrition. In such a way, the assessment of homes proves the overall positive character of the community, and the existence of multiple factors needed for safe and beneficial development, creation of families and children.

Family Assessment

The family assessment was conducted using the Friedman Family Assessment Model. The selected participants belong to middle-class families. The male participant has a five-year-old son, while the female participant has two children of 4 and 8 years. They report good relations within families, with no history of serious conflicts. There are also no past experiences with drug or alcohol addiction. Both interviewees view their children and families are the major value and agree that the community is beneficial for their development and upbringing. There are no severe diseases peculiar to family members, however, there are some chronic illnesses such as tonsillitis. The family assessment shows that households can be determined as prosperous and happy ones with no undesired behaviors.

Risk Assessment

Finally, a risk assessment was performed by asking respondents about the problems and risks peculiar to the area. Both participants admit the low incidence of substance, child, elder, or partner abuse in the area. They state that the health services remain accessible and available for all members; however, sometimes the price might be too high, and the insurance is critical.

Additionally, community members try to engage in healthy lifestyles and sports as a way of stress and weight management. At the same time, there are some cases of alcohol abuse; however, they are not regular and can be viewed as occasional events. In such a way, the participants think that their area is safe and no risks threaten them.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Community

From community assessment and the interviews with the residents, it is possible to conclude about the strengths and weaknesses of the community. The obvious advantage is the absence of serious risks for the health as there are no hazardous materials or factors that might precondition the critical deterioration of the health of members (“Miami, Florida public 2018,” 2018). Moreover, the area is tidy, clean, and well-arranged. The average income of members is medium or high (“Miami, Florida public 2018,” 2018). Another advantage is the absence of risk groups such as drug-dependent or aggressive groups. In such a way, the community is safe and prosperous, which can be viewed as one of the major advantages.

At the same time, some weaknesses should be considered. First of all, the statistics show that the overall poverty rate in other parts of the community exceeds twenty-four percent, which means that there are some problematic populations or areas that are characterized by some risks, such as food insecurity or the inability to get needed meals (“Miami, Florida population 2018,”2018). It also means that there is a gap between the prosperous and poor population groups, which might result in the growth of tension between them and conflicts (Feeding South Florida, 2017).

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Aggregate

The interview with the members of the selected aggregate shows several important advantages. First, it has resources needed for the personal and professional development of residents. The access to food, water, health services, and shops is sufficient and is considered as the strength of the area. Members can also enjoy the availability of public transport and safe streets with low rates of crime. The population is overall healthy and is interested in healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, the area is good for families with children as there are opportunities for their recreation and rest.

However, some factors can be viewed as possible risks peculiar to the aggregate. First, there are some rare accidents presupposing the use of alcohol, which can transform into a problem in the future. Second, along with the accessibility of health services, there is comparatively limited access to educational institutions. For this reason, there is a need for the further development of infrastructure and the creation of additional opportunities for children and students residing in the area. Furthermore, the existence of multiple restaurants or fast-foods can be a source of unhealthy behaviors or habits.

Identified Health Risks

In general, the assessment states that there are no critical health risks that might threaten the population. However, because of the existence of some factors mentioned above, some possible risks can be identified. First of all, as the majority of positive areas, there is an increased risk of obesity because of the stable and high level of income and the existence of restaurants in the area. Additionally, there is a risk of diabetes because of inappropriate food habits.

Conclusion

Altogether, the selected community can be viewed as a positive one. The assessments conducted among the residents show that they are happy with their current states, see no environmental risks, and enjoy the absence of serious conflicts and problems. The advantages of the aggregate include the high level of income, well-organized and accurate dwellings, good access to healthcare and other services.
