One of the most popular genres of fiction is magical realism. Magical realism is an artistic method in which supernatural elements are incorporated into a realistic world picture. A striking example of the works of this genre is the works of Nikolai Gogol, The Nose and Mikhail Bulgakov Master and Margarita. These works have a significant similarity, which lies in the fact that a person is a riddle that is difficult to solve. A good person can do unacceptable things and vice versa. Although the works have a common theme, they still have a significant difference, which lies in the tone of the narration.
The story The Nose is a riddle on the topic of what human nature is and what a person is. According to the plot of the work, one fine morning, the collegiate assessor Kovalev, waking up, discovers only a smooth spot in the place where the nose was yesterday (Gogol, 2020). A person who was once successful becomes very small and meaningful, no more than the most ordinary person. The work of the Master and Margarita also reveals the essence of people who can pretend that they are honest and decent, but Woland shows them that they are not at all who they are trying to seem (Bulgakov, 1996). The similarity of the works lies precisely in the fact that people want to appear better than they are.
The tone of the works is different since Gogol is trying to portray his main character as ridiculous. Bulgakov also tries to show readers the essence of people by creating situations in which people will show their pettiness. The work of the Nose may seem ridiculous and ridiculous, while the work of Bulgakov is more complex, and there is no comedy in it. Nevertheless, the authors sought to create a tone of magical realism, which makes the works similar, since although in real life people are exactly as they were shown, still elements of magic in life cannot be seen.
In conclusion, the works Nikolai Gogol’s The Nose and Mikhail Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita are written in the genre of magical realism. Both works are similar in that they reveal the essence of people, as well as in that they have bright elements of magical realism. The differences between the works are in tone; one author creates a comical situation, and the other is terrifying.
