Framing the Case
CUTCO is the largest American manufacturer and retailer of more than 100 various kitchen cutlery accessories. CUTCO cooperates almost exclusively with manufacturers from the United States to ensure stable quality and prices. The company relies on the direct sales approach, a key aspect of its business model that helps establish superior customer relationships.
The only distributor of the company’s products is the Vector Marketing Corporation, which mostly hires college students as sales representatives to connect with potential customers through referrals. As the company seeks to grow and reach more audiences, it may consider entering international markets. To achieve success, CUTCO should analyze the implications of this decision to make use of opportunities.
Issues and Opportunities
As outlined in the case, the CUTCO business model enables the company to succeed in the direct sales market. Customer loyalty sustains a community by sharing their experiences with the products. The level of control over the sales process, including direct marketing, pricing, and customer support, allows CUTCO to build direct relationships with clients and collect valuable feedback to improve products and services (Why Cutco?).
Thus, the company considers direct marketing and domestic production as assets that help it survive in the market. However, the company is unable to find US manufacturers that meet the expected price-quality balance; therefore, it already uses outside producers. Another issue the company can face is limited audience reach at a time when other companies are winning their share of the market.
This experience of hiring companies abroad can be an opportunity to expand the business further and enter international markets while remaining in line with the company’s goals of preserving product quality and customer service. It would allow the company to grow and address its limited reach. For example, the Pampered Chef, a competitor of CUTCO, experienced “tremendous international growth” after entering markets in many countries (“Pampered Chef Expands into France”). Another example of success is Amway, which is known worldwide now (“Amway Statistics: Market Report & Data”). Both experiences can be analyzed to leverage their strengths.
Assumptions
It is possible to assume that CUTCO’s expansion into foreign markets would diversify its market and reach more audiences, helping maintain the company’s growth. Considering that the company relies on outside manufacturers, it would be able to preserve product quality and offer international customers services similar to those provided to existing customers. Another assumption is that the company would consider allowing retailers to sell its products in foreign countries if direct marketing becomes problematic for some reason.
Addressing Issues and Opportunities
The lack of US manufacturers can prompt CUTCO to enter international markets. This solution can simultaneously address the limited reach issue. The fact that Vector Marketing relies on college students to sell its products shows that the company has limited resources to reach the global market. Thus, the pros of international expansion include broadening the target audience and gaining market share from competitors, such as Pampered Chef.
At the same time, there is a question about whether the same direct marketing strategy can be used in other countries and whether it aligns with the company’s values. For instance, CUTCO places great emphasis on customer service and stresses the degree of control over the process of building strong customer relationships. Moreover, the lack of brand recognition in a foreign country could force the company to sell through a retailer’s channel, resulting in a loss of control over pricing and customer support. Thus, the cons of the solution include the risk of compromising customer service quality and the loss of the ability to provide fast feedback to meet client demands.
Recommendation and Justification
CUTCO became famous for its focus on the superb quality of its services and products. The company should try to preserve its values and bring them to international markets to broaden its reach and remain competitive. To achieve this, it would be logical to expand into countries where the company already manufactures some items and to consider establishing business relationships with local producers in additional countries. This step would allow clients to receive the same level of service for fast returns if needed.
A thorough analysis of the business environment is needed to define cultural differences, identify potential competitors, and understand the population’s perception of direct marketing (Czinkota, 350-353). China is a promising country because CUTCO already produces some products there, and it has a continually growing economy with sufficient manufacturing capacity. Thus, by analyzing the positive examples of competitors and other companies that use direct marketing strategies, it would be possible to design a relevant marketing model to ensure international expansion.
