Decision Models for Management Course Exercises

Abstract

Self-assessments allowed students to understand what strengths and weaknesses they have. This is necessary in order to get to know themselves more deeply, as well as to assess how effective they will be in their work. Specifically, me, the exercises helped to pay more focused attention to how significant my weaknesses are for future work. In addition, now I know exactly what strengths are inherent in me and that they need to be improved and strengthened.

Summary

Even though the training was built in a non-standard way because the coronavirus pandemic hurt the educational process, each of us had the opportunity to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and outline an action plan to strengthen our advantages and overcome our shortcomings. Due to the exercises I went through; I realized what exactly I need to work on and what to change to find a worthwhile place for myself in my future. According to the test results, I belong to the category of theory X people. According to Touma (2021), people who correspond to theory X, are initiative-free, are not ready for responsibility and do not like to work. In addition, I realized that I did not have enough knowledge about myself, but the exercises I completed allowed me to understand myself more deeply.

Self-Reflection

Strengths and Weaknesses

Like many people, I have my own shortcomings, but I am aware of them and understand that they need to be worked harder on than on improving my strengths. According to one of the exercises, I realized that I belong to the type of worker for whom work is not a source of positive emotions. In this regard, this disadvantage of mine can also be an advantage. Knowing that I will be free from work after completing the tasks I have set, I will strive to perform them quickly and as efficiently as possible. This will allow me not to redo the work and finish it as soon as possible.

  • Motivation to Lead. I prefer not to be at the head of the company, which is my disadvantage since any motivation is lost because of it. I have no desire to take a leading position because I realize that my disadvantage is the lack of responsibility or unwillingness to bear it. Still, I know that financial rewards and bonuses associated with weekends can motivate me to do a good job if I know that I will get a day off or monetary compensation for a particular set of duties assigned to me, I will perform the tasks assigned to me more averagely.
  • Decision-Making Style. Since one of my disadvantages is the desire to be in a job where I will be aware that I am in security, I also have my advantage associated with this. My decision-making style will also be as safe and balanced as possible, allowing the company I work for to understand that they are also safe and do not bear risks associated with other decisions. Nevertheless, I believe this shortcoming needs to be carefully worked on and investigated and other solutions that may correspond to the task at hand. There are risky decisions, but they can bring the company a more significant profit or success than making safe decisions.
  • Strategic Planning. As for strategic planning, as a person who can instead be called initiative-free, I am not ready to make strategic plans and work on them. Probably, the lack of initiative and the desire to work on the company’s development is my weak side, which I also need to work on. This is because I, as part of the team, will have to make efforts to promote my company. Still, I could be more productive if offered financial rewards that would motivate me to work on strategic development.
  • Attitude Toward Teamwork. Moreover, because I do not like tasks that are entirely my responsibility, my strength is the ability to work in a team. I quickly joined the team and successfully interacted with new and already familiar people. By working together, we can achieve success in fulfilling the assigned team tasks, and at the same time, I will not think that in case of a mistake, all responsibility lies with me. I am also happy to share the success that we have achieved by working together with a team of my colleagues.

Reaction to the Assessments

Doing the exercises, I did not expect that I would learn something unexpected new about myself. My attitude to work and everything related to it was clearly at a younger age and has not changed significantly. I did not find any part of the work more interesting than the others, and my results were also expected. Still, the exercises helped me realize that my shortcomings are severe and can interfere with my work. I noticed that my imperfections also interfere with my daily life. In addition, I realized that I also have advantages that I need to work on and develop.

The Future

Still, I understand that if I take up correcting my weaknesses, I will have the opportunity to become a precious employee and discover new potential in myself. Undoubtedly, some strengths may disappear if the weak ones are corrected, but I will reveal my other advantages, which may eventually turn out to be more significant and necessary than those that exist now. I think it will be difficult to fix all my weaknesses because, for an extended period, I was not ready to change anything. Because we did a lot of evaluation exercises in Connect, I realized that these weaknesses may still be the factor that slows down my development and that it is still necessary to try to change them.
