Electronic and Telephone Surveys: Effectiveness in Data Collection

Introduction

The purpose of electronic surveys is to gather relevant information according to the question being researched at a designated time. This type of survey allows gathering information from the target audience based on their capabilities. The purpose of the survey is to get information not immediately, but over time, because the audience will have the opportunity to take it at a convenient time and reflect on the tasks/questions.

Independent and Dependent Variables

The independent variables (IVs) in an electronic survey can be assumed to be the set of questions by which researchers will control respondent behavior. Within psychedelic-assisted therapy, the choice of survey strategy is dominant because environmental and relational factors can influence respondent behavior (citation). The dependent variables (DVs) in electronic surveys are the respondents themselves because it is their responses and behavior that the researchers analyzed. When respondents answer questions, in what order, and how fully is the researcher’s primary interest? Electronic surveys create a comfortable environment for respondents to change their responses depending on the survey environment.

Electronic Surveys

Electronic surveys are quality surveys that allow for collecting information more reasonably and with a strategy. These surveys are much more convenient than other forms because they can contain precise wording with adequate justification (Nayak & Narayan, 2019). Electronic questioning is comfortable for the researcher and audience because they do not interact directly and have the opportunity for segregated work. The researcher reduces the risk of subjective evaluation for him or herself.

Strategies should be used to modify the structure, form, and platforms used to improve the results of an electronic survey. The choice of platform can often influence respondent behavior, so the most comfortable and versatile one should be chosen (Singh & Sagar, 2021). Working on question design, taking care of user comfort, and offering timely surveys can improve results and influence future use.

Surveys by Phone

Purpose

The primary purpose of telephone surveys is to obtain information quickly and directly from the respondent. Such surveys are characterized by a high speed of communication with the client, obtaining quick feedback, and the ability to directly assess the immediate results offline without the need to wait. These surveys aim to contact the respondent, assess their readiness for the survey, and conduct the survey to obtain results based on personal interaction.

IVs and DVs

The independent variables are the researcher’s behavior, the questions they compose, and the environment in which the respondent answers. These factors can be stable and affect the results obtained. Dependent variables are respondents who will change their behavior based on the researcher’s tone, ease of conversation, and personal characteristics (Brubaker et al., 2021). These factors are directly modified by the independent factors used, which the researchers create.

Critique

Surveys over the phone are not fully effective because the setting can change the survey results more than the researcher needs. The researcher controls fewer independent variables than in other types of surveys. Respondent-side conditions may have a more pronounced influence on responses, which can lead to misinterpretation of results (Brubaker et al., 2021). In addition, respondents’ answers may be unclear and inaccurate due to respondent stress, personal factors, and lack of eye contact.

Conclusion

To improve the results obtained through telephone surveys, researchers must prepare respondents in advance and ensure they have the time to do so. Often, these surveys are untimely and inconvenient, so ensuring that respondents are comfortable is necessary. In addition, one should pay attention to how questions are answered and change tactics immediately (Brubaker et al., 2021). Changing the tactics and format of the questions will also ease the burden on respondents’ answers and improve the results.
