Enhancing Student Engagement Through Varied Assessment

Adapting Teaching Approaches to Student Abilities

In the educational process, it is essential to find an approach that reveals each student’s abilities in the best possible way. This video highlights the importance and necessity of implementing several types of activities in the curriculum, each of which can help students develop their engagement and interest (CapRegionBOCES, 2016). Each student has unique learning patterns that speak of particular abilities to memorize and operate with information.

Types of Assessment Tasks in the Classroom

Thus, test tasks can be divided into several types: Do now, survey, quiz, and essay (CapRegionBOCES, 2016). At the same time, each task type aims to reveal different individual opportunities for students and allow them to better express themselves in the classroom.

Each student has a unique capacity for being interested in learning and expressing their knowledge (CapRegionBOCES, 2016). Daily assessments include many factors that the teacher must consider, such as the expressions on the students’ faces (CapRegionBOCES, 2016). Thus, it can be understood how much they are involved in the process, interested, or, on the contrary, bored.

Using Quizzes for Daily Learning Evaluation

To better teach students, I could use different types of tasks, combining them in the course of the educational process. For example, every day, specific short quizzes can be used to reveal how students learned from the previous lesson. In this way, attention could be drawn to which aspects of the topics require additional attention (CapRegionBOCES, 2016).

Leveraging Advanced Tasks to Measure Prior Knowledge

In addition, by giving students more advanced tasks, such as an essay or survey, it is possible to determine what information they already know. This is useful to prevent the teacher from focusing more on a topic that the students have learned well. If they are not yet ready to learn a particular topic, how they complete tasks may also be reflected. Teachers can use Do Now to evaluate children’s thinking and how they deal with unexpected, quick challenges.
