Introduction
In nursing practice, a nurse may often face ethical dilemmas when dealing with patients. This problem may arise, for example, in the decision-making process regarding care. The practice of a nurse may also be influenced by the opinion of a theorist who tells about possible solutions to difficult ethical situations. Reflection on dilemmas is an integral part of the work of a nurse, as it provides an understanding of the care provided and enables employees to develop professional skills.
Ethical Dilemma Analysis
In my nursing practice, I have faced many ethical dilemmas that I have had to overcome. The most notable cases were those concerning my patients’ data confidentiality. I had to take care of an elderly patient who had cognitive development problems. During this conversation, the patient disclosed confidential information regarding his inclination to use physical force against relatives. This situation has become revealed to me, as in this case, it is difficult to make the right decision, and disclosing this information could save someone’s life and health. I knew I had to act decisively and put human life first, but the dilemma did not let me.
This situation has given me an idea of how important it is to find a balance between the rules of the work and the ethical component. I have learned that preserving personal data is only essential if it doesn’t cause potential harm to other people. I was able to ensure the safety of other people because I realized the need to communicate the patient’s thoughts.
Among the theorists, Carol Gilligan was the most influential. Her theory is that there should be compassion, care, and understanding between the nurse and patient (Carol Gilligan). Applying this theory allows a compassionate approach to the care of the patient, focusing on the individual needs of the person. In this way, I have become better at analyzing the consequences of my actions and providing assistance that contributes to human well-being.
Conclusion
In conclusion, solving ethical problems in nursing is a complicated process, but it determines the professionalism of the specialist. By reflecting on these dilemmas, the worker can practice developing his skills and learning to get out of contentious situations appropriately. In this context, Carol Gilligan can provide valuable theoretical insight into why treating each patient compassionately and focusing on their wishes and needs is essential.
