Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ethical framework guiding the nursing profession as outlined by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, and the relevance of various nursing theories to the author’s practice. It examines how these principles and theories shape the author’s approach to patient care and their professional development. The author also contemplates the theoretical perspectives that will be influential as they transition to roles such as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Nurse Educator.
Code of Ethics
The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics is a set of guiding principles that direct nursing practice and ensure that all nursing actions are grounded in ethical integrity. The code comprises nine provisions that cover topics ranging from the nurse’s commitment to respecting all individuals to the nurse’s obligation to advance the profession, as well as the nurse’s duty to collaborate with other health professionals to promote health and well-being (Tluczek et al., 2019). The ANA Code of Ethics states that the fundamental responsibility of nurses is to promote, advocate for, and strive to protect the health, safety, and rights of patients. It recognizes the unique individuality, values, and cultural context of each patient, requiring that nurses provide care that is respectful and nonjudgmental. The code also emphasizes the importance of self-care and the need for nurses to maintain competence and continue personal and professional growth.
Relevant Nursing Theories
The nursing theories that are relevant to my current nursing practice are the Self-Care Theory by Dorothea Orem and the Human Caring Theory by Jean Watson. Orem’s Self-Care Theory posits that individuals are capable of self-care and that nursing should aim to empower them to manage their own self-care. This theory is particularly relevant in my practice, as it guides my approach to educating and empowering patients to take responsibility for their health.
Jean Watson’s Human Caring Theory, on the other hand, focuses on the holistic aspect of nursing care (Smith, 2019). It emphasizes the importance of caring and human connection in the healing process. This theory reinforces my practice by underlining the importance of compassion, empathy, and understanding in patient care.
As an aspiring Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Nurse Educator, there are several nursing theories that will greatly impact my role. Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory, for instance, will guide my understanding and approach to the various stages of skill acquisition. This theory will enable me to tailor my teaching strategies to the learning needs of novice nurses, thereby promoting their professional development.
Another significant theory is Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory (Smith, 2019). As an APRN or Nurse Educator, effective communication and relationship building will be critical components of my role. Peplau’s theory, which emphasizes the significance of nurse-patient relationships, will guide me in fostering productive interactions not only with patients but also with other healthcare professionals and students.
Moreover, the Transformational Leadership Theory, although not a nursing theory per se, will also be pivotal. This theory posits that leaders can inspire and motivate others to surpass their individual performance goals and collectively achieve a shared vision. As an APRN or Nurse Educator, I will need to harness this leadership style to promote a positive and productive work and learning environment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the ANA Code of Ethics serves as a fundamental guide for ethical nursing practice. The nursing theories that are currently relevant to my practice are Orem’s Self-Care Theory and Watson’s Human Caring Theory. As I transition into the role of an APRN or Nurse Educator, Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory, Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory, and the Transformational Leadership Theory will be key in shaping my practice.
