Introduction
Human services include various government and non-profit social support programs (Woodside & McClam, 2019). Service members’ quality of life is improved by these programs’ prevention and settlement of difficulties. The evolution of helping in human services reflects a commitment to addressing the diverse needs of marginalized populations.
History of Helping Within Human Services
Human services have always helped across cultures and reflected social norms. It began helping people in ancient civilizations where religious and cultural norms required helping people experiencing poverty (Woodside & McClam, 2019). Almshouses and district workhouses were founded in the 1600s and 1800s to serve people experiencing poverty, and the State Hospital opened in Williamsburg in 1773. (Woodside & McClam, 2019). The three cases above occurred before the 21st century.
Ways in Which Helping Has Changed Over Time
Industrial progress has altered human services over time. Human services have improved significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries (Woodside & McClam, 2019). The Industrial Revolution changed human services, community development, and disaster assistance (Mackelprang et al., 2021). For instance, mental health institutes consolidated and abandoned earlier methods.
General Nature of the Helping Process
After assessing the intervention’s efficacy and making improvements, build rapport and a working relationship with the client. Next, collaborate on a plan to solve the challenges and learn about the client’s needs and resources (Johnson et al., 2019). Lastly, the helper should carry out the plan and offer the required support and assistance to the needy person (Woodside & McClam, 2019). The two helping skills include actively listening and responding empathetically.
Role of Direct Service vs. the Roles of Administrative
Direct service in human services involves hands-on interactions with clients, providing direct support and assistance. It may include counseling, case management, or crisis intervention (Woodside & McClam, 2019). Administrative roles focus on organizational management, policy development, and program coordination.
Ten Different Groups/Population
Human services assist people experiencing homelessness, veterans, the LGBTQ+ community, refugees and immigrants, children, disabled individuals, older people, domestic violence victims, and people with an addiction (Woodside &McClam, 2019). While human services work to help the homeless and addicted, they struggle to get comprehensive and consistent support.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the practice of helping originates in ancient cultures and reflects a dedication to meeting the needs of marginalized groups. The field has adapted to changing societal dynamics, focusing on brief therapy to meet immediate needs. The helping process involves distinct stages and essential skills.
