📖 APA Format 101

The name of this style derives from the American Psychological Association.

The APA method mainly appears in papers on social sciences, education, and psychology.

Professionals developed the APA to make materials easier to understand and reduce language bias. At present, many scientific journals use original or modified versions of the APA style.

The 1st guidelines for this method appeared in 1929. The organization detailed them in an article posted in Psychological Bulletin. The 7-page document paved the pass for future versions of APA. These instructions were later expanded into the APA Publication Manual.

The style was further updated in the years 1974, 1983, 1994, and 2001.

The 7th edition of this method was introduced in 2019. However, many universities and journals still use the 6th edition, published in 2009.

Our citation machine APA 7 algorithm follows all rules of the current version.

🎁 APA 7th Edition - What's New about It?

The current edition of the APA format went through several changes. They reflect the increased citing of online materials, a push towards bias-free language, and technological advances for researchers and students. The modern citation machine APA format answers these trends.

There are several changes compared to the 2009 version of the format.

  • Stating the publisher's location in references is no longer required.

  • There’s no need to add “Retrieved from” before citing URLs. This rule doesn’t apply if a retrieval date is required. Researchers must include the website name. But there’s no need to add when it’s the same as the authors.

💬 APA Citation Format

The style has several features, which you’ll no doubt notice in the citation machine APA 7 quotes generated by our tool. They concern the title page, font options, spaces, references, page numbers, margins, and citations.

  • This method uses several fonts: sans serif (11-point Arial, 11-point Calibri. or 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode) or serif (12-point Times New Roman and 11-point Georgia).
  • APA 7 uses double spaces for the entire document. It includes the list of references and the title page.
  • The list of references always starts on a new page.
  • Pages are numbered in the upper right corner of pages beginning with the title page.
  • This style utilizes 1-inch margins on each side of the pages. Microsoft Word uses the same format.
  • Citations and references include both in-text citations and the list of references.
  • All APA 7 format papers begin with a title page which our tool can easily create.

Generating APA In-text Citations

APA in-text citations provide brief details about sources used in papers. They correspond to references listed at the end of the documents.

The citation machine APA 7 style uses an “Author-Date” format for in-text quotes, for example (Jones, 2003). The text only mentions the author’s last name and publication date.

APA 7 method allows using both parenthetical and narrative citations.

The picture compares parenthetical vs. narrative citations.
  • Parenthetical citations. This type is more common and has the writer's last name and date in parentheses. E.g., “This research demonstrates negative effects of long-term lockdowns (Herby, 2022).”
  • Narrative citations. The second type weaves the author’s name into the sentence. The publication date is added in parentheses at the end. E.g., “Herby (2022) claims that this research demonstrates negative effects of long-term lock-downs.”

There are several other peculiarities of APA 7 in-text citations.

One and Multiple Authors

Authors are people or organizations that create a piece of work. These can be anyone from research paper writers to movie directors.

When there’s one author, you start with their last name and add initials with periods:

(Davidson, 2018)

Two authors are linked with an ampersand “&” in parenthetical format or with “and” in narrative style:

(Davidson & Smith, 2018)

Davidson and Smith (2018) propose a different approach to this issue.

If the source has more than two authors, they aren’t listed in the in-text citation. Instead, the “et al.” that means “and others” is used:

(Davidson et al., 2018)

Missing Information

There are several things you can do when some of the information is missing:

  • No author. Use the source title.

(Title, 2018)

  • No date. Use the “n.d.” abbreviation.

(Davidson, n.d.)

  • No page number. Use an alternative locator or omit this data.

(Davidson, paragraph 6)

(Davidson, 2018).

Multiple Sources in One Statement

Researchers can combine in-text citations when a single statement has multiple supporting sources. In these cases, sources are listed in alphabetical order and are separated with semicolons.

If you cite several works by the same author, list publication dates divided by commas.

(Calvin, 2014; Jones, 2003; Smith, 2006;)

Generating APA Reference Entries

In the citation machine APA 7 style, reference entries contain detailed information about sources.

The picture lists the key elements of an APA reference entry.

APA reference list is placed on a separate page at the end of the papers. The references correspond to in-text citations present in the body text.

There are several things you should keep in mind when working on references.

Author

Authors are people or entities that create a piece of work. These can be anyone from researchers to podcast hosts. In the APA 7 format, their names are inverted.

Writers start with an author’s last name and state their initials:

Doyle, A. C.

Date

This component appears after the author's name. There are several rules when it comes to the date format.

  • Use the copyright date for books.
  • List the year of a volume’s publication for journal articles.
  • Check the “Last updated” date of web pages.

It looks something like this in references:

Doyle, A. C. (2017).

Title

This component details the name of the cited work. It can be various things: books, articles, videos, or audio titles. These are italicized in a separate case:

Doyle, A. C. (2017). The Sherlock Holmes Collection: Slip-Cased Set. ARCTURUS PUB.

Source

This component tells readers where they can find the referenced information. When citing stand-alone works, researchers include the publisher's name, platform, website, or database.

Additionally, it lists a DOI or URL.

Isaac Newton: Who He Was, Why Apples Are Falling. (2022, June 2). National Geographic. https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/isaac-newton-who-he-was-why-apples-are-falling/
