Introduction
Reflection allows for analyzing and evaluating the experience of individuals. People have the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills and deepen self-understanding and learning experiences. Subsequently, reflection supports personal development and problem-solving skills since the analysis of errors and achievements of the past allows acting more effectively in the future.
Gibbs’ reflective cycle (2020) is one of the models used for reflection and is an effective tool in analyzing group work. This model is used in the current paper to assess the author’s personal teamwork experience during presentation preparation. Although the presentation and its creation were quite successful, reflection helps to identify opportunities for improvement and more favorable actions in the future.
Description
Our class was tasked with creating a presentation by a team of five people on the course. Our group consisted of five girls, and we had the assignment to choose a topic and then develop the presentation by dividing the tasks. We held several meetings, the first of which was when the team chose the topic and distributed the research assignments among all participants.
We faced difficulties at this meeting due to disagreement, as each participant sought the most straightforward task. After the division of assignments and plan development, each member began to work on the research for the presentation. When the participants completed the study, there was a need for another meeting to report the results, exchange opinions, and prepare for the project. The team faced new problems organizing the meeting, as it was hard to assign a suitable time. Nevertheless, we managed to cope with the task and present our findings and results at the presentation.
Feeling
The task caused much excitement but appeared to be quite stressful when performing. Initially, I looked forward to working as a team, discussing, and meeting. However, after the presentation was completed, I was a little frustrated with the process, but this feature did not overshadow the satisfaction of the completed assignment.
At the first meeting, I did not want to let the team down and become the one who did not meet the task. Therefore, I tried to get the one that I could complete successfully. Later, I felt anxious and a little annoyed when the team could not find a compromise in the distribution of tasks and the appointment of the meeting, as I was afraid that these problems would affect the team’s success. I assume the other participants had similar feelings of irritation and anxiety. Now, I think even the negative experiences we have faced can teach us how to act in the future.
Evaluation
Considering our teamwork, I can note both the outstanding achievements of the team members and some negative aspects. Each participant did significant research work and completed their task by the deadline, contributing to the project. However, the work process organization faced many challenges and problems, negatively affecting our experience. Although we tried to fulfill our research well, ineffective organization and difficulties in finding a compromise prevented it.
Analysis
Analyzing the situation, I can see opportunities for improving teamwork. The presentation was completed, and each participant’s contribution to the study demonstrated a desire for success. The whole team worked well, and the division of tasks made it possible to complete the presentation on time.
However, greater coherence between participants and their actions could improve our work. Leadership and communication are potential opportunities to increase the chances of assignment success. In particular, studies demonstrate that leadership, which includes encouraging action, an individualized approach, and similar qualities, can improve team communication, collaboration, and cohesiveness to lead to project success (Imran et al., 2019).
The team leader would be able to assess the participants’ knowledge and skills and distribute tasks accordingly. Finally, the leader would also manage the participants’ actions, making them more consistent and organizing a meeting without problems. Considering all the mistakes and opportunities discussed, I am sure that all the participants will be able to improve their work in any team in the future.
Conclusion
Our team learned from the teamwork that cooperative work requires considerable effort. We have seen the challenges associated with such an experience and will be able to prevent similar problems in other circumstances. We should develop communication skills and planning competencies to facilitate preparation for projects in the future. I also think gaining new experience through participating in other group work and projects will be helpful for me and my teammates. We will better understand the group dynamics, challenges, problems that the teams can face, and opportunities for improvement.
Action Plan
After analyzing my experience, I can assume that when working on a new group project, I would suggest choosing a leader before starting work. If it is necessary to distribute tasks, I will invite the team to describe their strengths and justify the choice of a specific job. Establishing communication channels to discuss assignments and meetings is also essential. I need to develop communication and negotiation skills to achieve such goals. Such competencies will help me be convincing and convey my ideas to my teammates.
Reflection Conclusions
Applying Gibbs’ reflective cycle allowed me to critically review my teamwork experience. As a result, I found strengths and weaknesses in the team. Moreover, the model involves considering the prerequisites and reasons for specific actions. Given the peculiarities of experience, the model provides a basis for planning possible measures in the future under similar circumstances. Moreover, reflection has deepened my knowledge and understanding of the resulting teamwork.
