Overview of the Case
Harley-Davidson, a well-known motorcycle manufacturer, faced several difficulties maintaining growth amid shifting market dynamics. During the Great Recession, the company, well-known for its devoted clientele and robust brand recognition, struggled with declining sales and profits. Difficult challenges were posed by factors such as shifting demographics, heightened competition, and economic downturns. To tap into new market niches, the company sought to innovate by launching new products and growing globally (Dyer, 2020). Harley-Davidson also found it difficult to attract younger, more diverse audiences, as it was largely dependent on an aging traditional clientele of White men aged 35 to 74.
Analysis of Stakeholder Engagement
Dealerships are crucial to advancing Harley-Davidson’s strategic plan among the various stakeholder groups. Being the company’s main point of contact with customers, dealerships have a big impact on the business. Customers’ decisions to buy, how people perceive brands, and their overall market presence are all influenced by them. To help the business make strategic decisions, dealerships are also essential in giving feedback on customer preferences, market trends, and product performance.
Harley-Davidson dealerships are motivated to interact with the company because they have a stake in its success. To increase sales and retain customers, dealerships likewise depend on strong brand recognition and high-quality products. As such, their participation in strategic planning is essential for coordinating corporate goals, improving operational effectiveness, and cultivating cooperative relationships.
Effective Communication Strategies
Harley-Davidson must foster open dialogue and collaboration through regular communication channels to effectively engage dealerships. According to Kujala et al. (2022), it will foster “jointness of interest, trust, and positive outcomes of stakeholder engagement” (p. 1146). Such a method involves establishing forums where dealerships can interact directly with company executives, share insights, and provide feedback.
Another effective communication strategy involves incentivizing dealerships to actively participate in strategic initiatives. Harley-Davidson can offer financial incentives, performance bonuses, or exclusive rewards for achieving strategic goals. Therefore, the firm must launch “incentives for organizations to engage with their stakeholders, evidencing dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders” (Stocker et al., 2020, p. 2072). By aligning incentives with strategic outcomes, the company motivates dealerships to invest time, resources, and effort in driving strategic change.
