A Summary of the Chronic Condition
Various chronic conditions spread through different countries, impacting people’s health and way of life. One such disease is multiple sclerosis, which affects the central nervous system and partially peripheral nervous system (Trevisan et al., 2019). It leads to dramatic changes in behavior, causing disability and morbidity. Individuals who suffer from this condition need additional quality assistance that the unique bodies may ensure.
Multiple sclerosis appeared almost two centuries ago and has been influencing people with harsh complications. This disease occurs when cranial nerves diverge from the brain, and motor nerves diverge from the spinal cord (Trevisan et al., 2019). Myelin is a thick nerve membrane that protects the nerve and increases its speed (pdf). Its primary damage leads to the gradual development of multiple sclerosis (Trevisan et al., 2019).
The morbidity is spread and affects women three times more than men and people between the ages of 20 and 50 years (Trevisan et al., 2019). The changes in the behaviors caused by this condition are revealed through inflexibility, apathy, aggression, and irritability (Trevisan et al., 2019). It leads to eyesight disability and poor coordination and movement.
Impediments When Patients Utilize the Laws That Affect People with Disabilities
Disabled people with multiple sclerosis usually face challenges on the legal level. For example, individuals with this condition oppose discrimination in the workplace. For this reason, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been established to protect the rights of such people (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).
However, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) does not enforce this Act, which may cause such challenges as low salaries, unjustified demands from disabled people, and unprofessional attitudes (U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). It also touches the medical workers, who, in harsh conditions, serve disabled persons (De Carvalho & Magalhães, 2013). DOLs battle this collective problem called discrimination through various assistance programs.
There is an impediment connected with acquiring Medicaid by individuals who have multiple sclerosis. In a time when different social projects exist, people do not receive the help they need because of gaps in the legal system. Such a program is Medicaid, which provides free or low-cost care based on different criteria (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). This program gives health coverage only to those families and persons who meet specific and limited requirements (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Consequently, people cannot obtain the quality and full assistance the program should provide.
