There is no use denying the fact that literature is a very powerful remedy that has a great influence on people. There are many ways in which this influence can be realized. Authors can use unexpected development of a plot or some unusual stylistic devices to attract a reader or make him/her think about the ideas which the author wants to reflect in his/her work. With this in mind, it is possible to say that different kinds of literary works have a great number of devices that help to create the atmosphere and show the authors intention to cogitate about some issues. To understand this statement better, it is possible to analyze a certain story in order to see peculiarities of the usage of such resources of literature as plot, characters, and stylistic devices.
First of all, it should be said that usually, the author uses different resources and devices, taking into account the main idea which he/she wants to express in his/her work. The more complicated and important the issue is, the more recourses the author uses. That is why it possible to say that a great number of different stylistic devices and resources of literature lead to a better understanding of the main ideas of the author.
To support the previous statement with clear evidence analysis of the short story, A Rose, for Emily by William Faulkner should be provided. The whole story is devoted to the description of the life of a woman who spends the bigger part of her time in the house. Generations changes; however, Emily does not leave her house. Besides, the culmination of the story is Emily’s death and horrible discovery that people make while entering her room. They see a corpse of Emilys fiancé with the curl of grey hair near him. At first glance the story seems rather strange and deprived of any sense. However, further analysis of the work helps to understand the main ideas better.
First of all, it is possible to say that with the help of Emilys house, the author wants to show the complexity of the life of woman in society. In the first lines of the work, it is described as “lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps-an eyesore among eyesores” (Faulkner para. 2). The author creates the image of the house with the help of personification for readers to understand its important role in the story. It serves as the symbol of mental illness and death. Emily is imprisoned there and she has to spend her life in this house as it “was all that was left to her” (Faulkner para. 27). Being not able to change her destiny, Emily dies in the house and, moreover, she buries the only person who is close to her there.
It is possible to say that there is a great number of other resources in this work. The author creates the image of Emily in order to underline her doomness and tragic destiny. Being the representative of the old generation she has no perspectives and the author underlines it.
Having analyzed the story A Rose for Emily, it is possible to make certain conclusion. The author uses different literary resources in order to make readers understand his ideas and feel the atmosphere of the story.
