Logos, Ethos and Pathos in McGonigal’s Argument

McGonigal’s presentation about stress management is well-developed. She states the thesis that people power over stress, and the main factor is the mindset about stress. She appeals to the audience’s emotions by sharing her working experience and confessing that she was wrong about her statements. Then, McGonigal shares the research data showing that the number of deaths related to the stress of the people who treated pressure as a good experience to their body equals to zero. She also appeals to science and health data, describing how a human heart reacts to stress. Her arguments are straightforward, and she applies the counterargument that stress always meant to be bad. This presentation strategy helps in developing McGonigal’s argument because logos makes it simple to understand, ethos calls to trust her experience as a psychologist, and pathos evokes the emotions to convince the truthfulness of the thesis.

The Addiction to Cellphone Limits Engagement in an Active Social Life states the thesis about the modern smartphone addiction: there are deeper root causes of the addiction to be cured to manage it. To convince the audience, I will use pathos to remind them of the addiction’s urgency as well as ethos when quoting from the essay and the studies it includes. There are also logos to use: finding the root of a cellphone addiction is a logical way of healing disease. Researches of the root causes, and the diseases that might cause the dependency will be used as supporting points to the logos. I will also use ways of curing the addiction from the essay as counterarguments to the central thesis. Such a structure will make a presentation convince, and will appeal to the audience’s emotions by its urgency.
