Identification of Nursing Framework
“Knowledge as a component of the sociocultural orientation basic conditioning factor enhances prevention of hazards” is from Madeleine Leininger’s transcultural nursing theory. According to Berhanu et al. (2021), the framework holds that nurses should better understand their patients’ cultures to provide the best care. They can easily guide treatment while respecting these people’s traditions and worldviews. Moreover, the theorist discovered that patients are more likely to adhere to health recommendations when their caregivers understand and respect their way of life. Therefore, integrating knowledge of a patient’s sociocultural orientation into nursing practice can facilitate better prevention of health hazards and improved outcomes.
Example of Other Application
The transcultural nursing theory can be applied in nursing practice beyond addressing health hazards. A perfect example would involve a diabetic patient from a culture rooted in culinary traditions like Italians. These people have a rich history of foods that dates back to the ancient periods. Some of their common traditional dishes are pasta and pizza (Evans, 2023). For such patients, it would be challenging for healthcare professionals to manage their conditions due to cultural dietary preferences. However, a better understanding of their way of living can help a nurse forge a connection with the patient. They will acknowledge the importance of cultural orientation and educate them about healthier food alternatives.
Definition of Concept and Measurement
Transcultural nursing theory holds that cultural competence is essential in nursing care. Nurses must understand and integrate patients’ cultural backgrounds into the delivery of healthcare. However, cultural competence refers to a healthcare worker’s ability to interact effectively with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds (Berhanu et al., 2021). All of these can be measured by assessing domains such as cultural knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The cultural competence assessment tool (CAT) can be used to evaluate these concepts (Medina et al., 2022). It is a self-report questionnaire that assesses providers’ perceptions of other cultures and their ability to attend to everyone competently.
