“Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House” by Audre Lorde

The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house is Audre Lorde’s provocative admonishment, and it is a warning that Black and other academics of color should heed. Lorde uses dismantling the master’s house as a metaphor for intersectional systems and structures of oppression that produced and perpetuated health inequality in United States Black communities. She uses emotion to empower and express herself, and the erotic becomes a condition of emotional liberation, not just sex, a specified truth (Lorde 110). I realized that escaping the oppressive Master’s House meant escaping the measure of good rebellion, good femininity, and good feeling. She delivered a powerful message about the significance of women’s feelings and desires in a culture that represses them.

The frightening power of Lorde’s slur is that people can extend it to language, violence, and art. This mysterious, intuitive power of her sentence is frequently used to leverage a speaker’s allusion. In a world where our economic rulers claim ownership over everything, only resignation is conceivable. The challenges of being a Black or another racial or ethnic minority professor at mainly White universities are well known (Lorde 103). Still, those being Black or other critical health equity researchers of color are less so.

Finally, this book is heartbreaking in terms of the relationships between women and the distinctions between white and black womanhood. Lorde emphasized the necessity of exploring the origins of the furious Black woman. Those were repressive, aggressive, silencing, and dismissive. Even as an academic, her personal experience revealed the problem’s profundity. According to Lorde, the Black female identity transcends racial and gender barriers and is defined by the intersection of both repressive regimes.
