Lupke, Christopher. “Bridge Essay: Modern Poetry as a Global Phenomenon.” A Companion to World Literature (2020): 1-7.
The essay by Christopher Lupke provides an insight into the history of poetry and the way different styles from different parts of the world contributed to the formation of modernism in poetry. The text connects poetry to philosophical and religious trends that shaped the art form. The work of Lupke is relevant to the research as Merrit Malloy is a modern poet, and her writing incorporates a lot of styles and influences from earlier eras and geographical eras. Therefore, the source is mentioned in the bibliography of my research to provide a more in-depth analysis of the “Epitaph” poem.
Owen, W. J. B. “Six. Essays upon Epitaphs.” Wordsworth as Critic. University of Toronto Press, 2019. 115-150.
This is a fragment of the book “Wordsworth as Critic”, which is devoted to the theory of poetry in the view of Woodworth. It is a collection of his essays and personal statements about various topics. The particular part used in the bibliography of my research is related to epitaphs, as there are six essays on the matter. This source is used for the research as it correlates with my topic, which is Merrit Malloy and her poem “Epitaph (When I die). It is crucial to gain a deeper understanding of the genre by reading the critique and opinions of different writers, including Wordsworth.
Pascual Muñoz, Gisela. “The topic of death in the poetry of Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton.” (2017).
This article unifies the works of some of the greatest poets, such as Whitman, Dickinson, Plath, and Sexton. The approach of tracing the representation of common themes by different authors is interesting as it is easier to trace stylistic and narrative features, which help readers understand the poet better. In addition, the are three female poets mentioned in the source, and the analysis of their works of death is interesting as it provides the female perspective on it. This is relevant to my research as Merrit Malloy is also a female poet who wrote on the theme of death. Hence, the source allows me to compare and contrast the way death is reflected in the art of different poets.
