Nevada Harsh Land: Roughing It by Mark Twain

Roughing It was written by Mark Twain in 1872 to present his first-hand experiences from Nevada. He learned to write there and found inspiration that brought his talent to the surface. His adventures and impressions from this city are described in the piece Roughing It. Mark Twain never returned to Nevada; however, he constantly mentioned his colorful experiences in the city for the rest of his career. Furthermore, Roughing It presents Mark Twain’s early adventures in the 1860s in Salt Lake City, including real-estate speculation experiences and the beginning of his writing career. After reading this book, it might be less challenging to understand later ones such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer since they are strongly connected with adventures in Nevada.
