Nurse Practitioners and Evidence-Based Practice: Nurturing Critical Thinking Skills

Nurse practitioners working in the adult gerontology acute care site at the University of Miami Hospital should be ready to use various resources to find the necessary information and face multiple challenges in dynamic clinical settings. Thus, the Internet and databases such as PubMed and NCBI were essential, as they helped to find necessary articles and clinical guidelines and collect up-to-date, evidence-based data. Moreover, interaction with colleagues and more experienced individuals is essential for an NP, as peer learning and mentorship greatly enhance professional competence.

For students who will go into the setting in the future, I recommend devoting more attention to developing critical thinking skills. They are closely connected with evidence-based practice and the ability to implement the newest solutions into the practice. Critical thinking is also essential for diagnosing and associating specific symptoms with diseases (Sabatine, 2023). Moreover, focusing on working with individuals is essential, as their well-being, dignity, and outcomes are central to the NP role.

Role Development from RN to Novice Nurse Practitioner

Moreover, during the practicum experience, I experienced a significant change in my role and professional mindset. First, it is possible to admit the higher levels of responsibility. Second, it implies more opportunities for professional and personal development. For instance, I experienced serious growth in my critical thinking and evaluation skills.

Using the knowledge acquired during the practicum, I enhanced my decision-making and ability to interact with clients more effectively. At the same time, during the next practicum, I would like to focus more on evidence-based practice and its implementation in real-life conditions, especially when managing complex or high-risk patients. Moreover, learning innovative approaches to help patients remain effective is essential.

Educational Experiences to Incorporate into Future Practice

Speaking about my clinical practice, I can use the experiences from the practicum to improve it. I can use the same approaches to collecting information about problematic cases, as learning is essential for NP growth and adaptability. Moreover, it is possible to address colleagues and find solutions through collaborative problem-solving. In such a way, the course was a significant step toward my professional growth and preparation for advanced nursing practice.
