There is a certain need for standards modification in the police that should be performed immediately. Firstly, in recent years the departments started to decrease the entry barriers for the officers in order to attract more people to work there (Collins and Pane, 2016). In such circumstances, even those who are in a regular situation would not manage to get a job now will have influence and authority in society. It is dangerous for the population due to the fact that it may lead to unethical behavior, poor performance, and even abuse of power.
Moreover, a particular amount of inequality exists in the departments of the police. Some branches practice different testing methods that prevent minorities from getting the officer’s position (Collins and Pane, 2016). Although checking criminal records and credit history may be reasonable for the future representative of the law, minorities often experience more discrimination and prejudices towards them. Their members tend to have more issues with the justice and financial systems due to the less favorable conditions they have to live in (Collins and Pane, 2016). In addition, some tests they have to perform do not fully demonstrate their potential and do not guarantee to have essential skills for the job. Consequently, minorities become discriminated against and get fewer chances to get a position in the police department.
Thereby, the standards for future potential police officers should always be high, and they have to go through precise inspection and testing before getting involved in the work. However, some parts should be modified for minorities to have more possibilities to meet the barrier. It is better if the system is colorblind and unnecessary testing that does not identify the level of their professional efficiency and only disqualifies people.
