I find the portrayal of the scientific method in the chapter especially insightful. Before, I thought that high blood pressure was a universally negative indicator that poses a serious risk for heart disease and stroke. I was surprised that my belief differs from historical views where high blood pressure signified good blood flow; hence, it was considered beneficial (Bryson, 2019). Such a contradiction showcases the evolving nature of medical science, where new research and understanding can completely overturn long-held beliefs.

The topic of blood transfusions is interesting as well since I had always thought of transfusions as a completely straightforward solution for blood loss; however, the chapter introduced me to the complexities of the medical procedure. Surprising Moments in the Reading

I was highly surprised by how complex the nature of blood actually is – it is a fact that extends far beyond its basic function of carrying oxygen. Such complexity is something I had not fully appreciated before. For instance, the revelation that blood types do not have a clear evolutionary advantage was especially insightful, even if they can offer resistance to specific diseases (Bryson, 2019). I had always assumed that every aspect of human biology had a clear evolutionary purpose, including blood types.

There is a clear contrast between the practices of the past and modern ones, which showcases the massive evolution of medical science that has taken place. Thus, learning about historical medical practices – bloodletting and the use of bleeding – as treatment was surprising as well (Bryson, 2019). It is almost hard to believe that such practices were once the norm, given our current knowledge and technology. Maybe surgery will be seen as something too invasive and risky when they have the technology to treat all diseases without doing a single cut.

The chapter was highly insightful in showing how scientists work – the most prominent ones are the researchers and practitioners who always question the norm.
