Society’s Safety and Ways of Improvement

Bans on guns have been a relevant topic for discussion, and it might seem like an excellent solution for reducing violent crimes among the population. The problem includes numerous cases when people used the possibility of owning a gun mainly to commit crimes rather than protect themselves. The interesting aspect is that people often buy guns to protect themselves from other people with firearms. Although there are still different ways of harming and attacking people, for example, the knife or the bit, guns are the most effective and consequently dangerous of them all (How Gun Policies Affect Violent Crime, 2020). However, the gun control policy still may decrease the number of cases of accidental shootings or suicides. Also, mass shootings, specifically those that happen in school, can happen less often due to the difficulties of getting guns.

Though the gun policy might make some improvements in the safety and well-being of society, it will only eliminate the cause, but not the reason. Several factors motivate people to act violently and attack other citizens. Some are connected with racial or sexist prejudice, poorness, dysfunctional family, and many others. Since the trust in the police has drastically reduced in the last several years due to police brutality, the structure inside the field should be reformed so that people would trust the police again.

Thus, to stop people from using weapons and turning to the police in the case of an emergency, the government should develop a strategy for improving the relationships between the police and the citizens. The victims of domestic abuse should get better protection and recognition from the law by punishing the abusers by providing them with a restriction order or imprisonment. Families with neglecting parents also have to be more properly investigated, and the children should receive decent care in foster families or under the government’s custody. Overall, if the policymakers focus on solving vital social issues and provide the population, significantly the marginalized and neediest groups, with decent living conditions. In that case, the number of violent crimes will eventually decrease.
