Southwest Airlines’ Positive Organizational Change

For Southwest Airlines, one of the world’s prominent low-cost carriers, positive organizational change, in the form of promoting a culture of improvement, can support and improve its competitive advantage globally. Organizational change can maximize the carrier’s global reputation as an animal-friendly and reliable carrier. It would support the company’s ability to differentiate itself from the world’s other affordable airlines and win the trust of middle-income passengers traveling with pets and those valuing punctuality.

Improvements pertaining to preventing culture-related deficiencies can be crucial in the company’s case. In 2018, the U.S. public was outraged by a video that depicted Southwest’s employee throwing a container labeled as containing live fish (Deabler, 2018). Positive change, for instance, the incorporation of ethical values into baggage handler education, implementing stricter pet transportation exams for employees, or promoting the culture of reporting animal abuse by colleagues, can prevent the incident from becoming an acceptable norm and harming the company’s reputation in the future. Success in seeking global recognition as the provider of safe services for pet owners will then support the business’s global competitive ability by improving the quality of service.

Additionally, positive change, including fostering a culture of excellence and staying up-to-date with advanced aircraft maintenance technologies, can also help the company sustain its ability to compete in the global market by preventing reputational and financial losses from technological disruptions causing flight cancellations. In recent years, Southwest Airlines has had a series of mass flight cancellation events, including over 1300 flights canceled on April 2, 2022, as a result of “intermittent technology issues following routine overnight maintenance” (NBC Chicago Staff, 2022, para. 2). Organizational change and fostering the workforce’s readiness for taking responsibility and sharing their incident prevention ideas could be helpful (Umut & Aslan, 2019). For Southwest Airlines, such strategies may result in the minimization of technology-related issues caused by outdated working practices, thus improving its global reputation as a reliable carrier that fails to provide transportation services only if encountering extraneous factors that it cannot control, such as weather conditions or changes to global air traffic caused by other carriers. These reputational gains will solidify the company’s competitive advantage on a global scale by affecting foreign customers’ preferences and levels of trust.
