Steroids in Sports: Overview and Analysis

Mazzeo, F. (2018). Anabolic steroid use in sports and in physical activity: Overview and analysis. Sport Mont, 16(3), 113-118. Web.

In her article, the author describes the problem of the use of doping by athletes. Sport is one of the most common activities for both adults and children, but some people strive for great success, and it will be difficult for them to win without doping and, in some cases, impossible. The author defines doping as using artificial performance enhancement methods by athletes despite existing prohibitions (Mazzeo, 2018). There are many different types of doping, one of the most commonly used is Anabolic-androgenic steroids. They provoke the production of testosterone in men and women, which allows them to succeed in competitions, as well as to acquire a sporty appearance. Naturally, the use of steroids is strictly prohibited and controlled by a special commission. Still, people can purchase steroids through illegal websites and companies on the Internet. The author claims that steroids are administered orally and parenterally; in addition, there are various schemes for taking anabolic (Mazzeo, 2018). Even though steroids are banned, athletes continue to use them.

The use of anabolic and steroids harms the existence of people in society. Athletes who take steroids before competitions and who are caught doing so can be punished by the commission and receive a share of the anger of their rivals (Mazzeo, 2018). So, a country whose athletes have repeatedly been caught using banned substances can automatically become an outcast among other countries. In addition to the negative impact on the lives of athletes, steroids also affect the lives of people not involved in sports. Taking steroids and anabolic can lead to psychiatric abnormalities and aggression. Irritability, fatigue, aggressive behavior is an incomplete list of side effects of taking steroids. Undoubtedly, sports commissions struggle with the use of banned drugs by athletes, but still, some continue to take supplements that have a negative impact on health and society. The sociological theory demonstrates that taking steroids will lead to the rejection of a sportsman or an entire team in society due to violation of the rules that are the same for everyone.

In his article, the author describes various sports in which the use of steroids is registered. The presence of many athletes taking steroids began to attract attention and increase the number of disputes and scandals. Athletes who were once less physically developed attracted people’s attention to their new physical form, demonstrating their use of steroids (Page, 2021). Because of athletes who took illegal supplements, successful athletes who did not take anything illegal went unnoticed. In addition, players who did not use steroids were often forced to fight with those who did not neglect the use of prohibited drugs (Page, 2021). Such a confrontation has always been brutal for clean athletes, but nevertheless, some have achieved success despite the difficulties.

The use of steroids in any sport provokes scandals that harm society. Page (2021) claims that steroids can bring tremendous results, that some countries are willing to risk the complete exclusion of an entire nation from the Olympic Games in the name of the use of steroids. Athletes caught on doping can be deprived of all awards and medals, which changes people’s attitude towards such athletes and may also deprive some children seeking to achieve success in sports of the desire to do it in an honest way. Athletes taking steroids acquire mental disorders and become aggressive, which pushes them to use other narcotic drugs (Page, 2021). Athletes who have fallen into doping addiction destroy their relationships with friends and family and more and more withdraw into themselves. It is necessary to find ways that will contribute to the elimination of doping, which can be done through monitoring and training of athletes.
