The “Interpersonal Relations Theory” by Hildegard Peplau

Introduction

Nursing theories are powerful frameworks that guide practitioners to provide personalized and high-quality care to their patients. Hildegard Peplau is one of the professionals whose ideas continue to reshape healthcare practice. Her “Interpersonal Relations Theory” identifies the nursing process as a sequential procedure that focuses on the best problem-solving methods and therapeutic relationships to improve the level of patient-nurse collaboration and maximize the desired outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to combine Peplau’s concepts and the competencies acquired from class to develop a personal philosophy of practice.

Thesis and Basis

Peplau’s theory presents the best foundation for establishing positive relationships with patients and applying clinical guidelines. Practitioners can use the outlined ideas to combine emerging evidence and modern technologies to offer high-quality and personalized care. Arabaci and Taş (2019) indicate that Peplau’s framework is capable of transforming the field of nursing. Additionally, Quinn and McDonough (2019) acknowledge that the IRT is capable of minimizing tension and supporting the introduction of superior changes to improve patients’ experiences. These studies explain why there is a need for practitioners to borrow most of the concepts associated with it.

Discussion

Interpersonal Relations Theory

Peplau offers a detailed model that practitioners can follow to establish an interpersonal bond with the targeted patients. The nurse will analyze the existing situation and consider new ways to provide high-quality care. The emerging process needs to be therapeutic in such a way that the professional pursues it as a healing art (Arabaci & Taş, 2019). The new relationship increases the level of trust and allows the targeted patient to receive quality support and re-pattern his or her experience. The nurse will apply therapeutic concepts to solve emerging problems and support the highest level of collaboration. This approach will ensure that the two partners focus on the same goal, thereby supporting the delivery of high-quality medical support.

Personal Concept and Theory

Personally, I am planning to develop a new theory based on Peplau’s thoughts and the insights gained in class. For instance, I will use the four metaparadigms of nursing to define patients, integrate the environment efficiently, and re-pattern the existing energy fields using proper interpersonal relations. I will embrace these principles of nursing to focus on the needs of my respective patients while addressing emerging challenges, such as justice, benevolence, and integrity (Quinn & McDonough, 2019). I will follow the concepts of cultural competence and implement desirable approaches to provide personalized medical services.

Emerging clinical guidelines and evidence-based practices will form the basis for my care delivery model. My theory will also be defined by collaborative practices and the desire for improved care delivery while addressing most of the existing problems. The established therapeutic relationship with every patient will result in problem-solving and eventually deliver a positive patient-nurse experience. I will engage in continuous learning to acquire additional insights for forming better relationships with my patients and learning more about their demands (Hagerty et al., 2017). These initiatives will result in a superior personal philosophy and theory that resonates with the health needs of the people I serve. I will also collaborate with different professionals in the field, identify emerging medical technologies, and apply them in different settings to deliver high-quality care.

Conclusion

The ultimate aim of nursing is to transform the experience of the targeted patient while supporting the healing process. The above discussion has identified Peplau’s IRT as one of the outstanding theories that can guide more practitioners to offer high-quality medical services. The combination of this framework with my nursing knowledge will result in a superior personal theory of care delivery.
