I listened to Haruki Murakami’s interview “I’m a Runner: Haruki Murakami.” The writer explains how exercise has changed his social and physical lifestyle (Lee, 2005). In the second interview, Murakami talks about his writing process, general life, and characters that appear in his writing. Murakami reveals that he loves cats but does not keep one at home. He also enjoys watching baseball at the park or cable TV. As for his characters, Murakami creates all of them from scratch except one ‘bad guy’ he intentionally used (Treisman, 2019). When he begins to write, it starts from the real world holding his pen, but he enters into the unreal world and interacts with it. Murakami’s inspirations come from within him, but he has written about 9/11, tsunamis, and other sad events in Japan and elsewhere. Reading Murakami’s interviews gives me an insight into the writer’s process and style of writing. Therefore, they will improve my understanding of the exam book as I relate to the author’s mind.
