An interracial crime refers to an offense where the perpetrator and the victim are the same race. Conversely, an interracial crime involves an offender and victim of different races. For violent victimizations, interracial crime is more prevalent than interracial crime. Examples of crimes included under violent victimizations are robbery, rape, homicide, and aggravate assault. For instance, most white murder victims are usually killed by fellow white people. It is approximated that about 80% of white murder victims are killed by white people, and 90% of black people who are murdered are typically killed by someone of the same race. The records also show that Asian on Asian crime is the most common in this race group. However, it is not as high as white on white or black on black crime. Similar to statistics about crime by race, data shows that offenders and victims typically share ethnicity. Hispanic on Hispanic crime is more prevalent than Hispanic on non-Hispanic crime. In summary, most offenders commit crimes against people of a similar race or ethnicity to them.
Some people erroneously believe that black people commit the majority of crimes. They assert that black people commit most crimes both within and outside their race. In 2015, Donald Trump, the then-Republican presidential candidate, claimed that black on white crime rate was 80%, while black on the black crime rate was almost 100%. From multiple research done over the years, these statements were false and misleading. It is dangerous to make such claims because it stereotypes African Americans as violent and aggressive. Further, it contributes to the high rate of police brutality against black people and their overrepresentation in prisons. Acknowledging that most crimes are interracial is an essential step towards reducing the overall crime rate.
