The Role of Empathetic Listening in Communication

Chosen Video and Effective Listening

Listening plays a significant role in communication, especially when demonstrating empathy towards others. It provides an opportunity to elevate the interaction process between individuals and bring an exceptional level of awareness and understanding of another person’s thoughts, feelings, and central message. A video titled “Big Hero 6 – Tadashi is here” was selected for analysis as part of this work.”

The peculiarity of the interaction in this context is that the main characters are a robot and a boy. However, this aspect is not an obstacle to allocating valuable information about the importance of empathy in communication.

Effective Listening and Empathy

In the frame of the selected video, effective listening is used to express empathy. An example would be that the robot reads the boy’s physical condition and draws conclusions based on this data. Hence, he has increased blood pressure, which is an indicator of a high level of distress. People cannot access such data in real life, but when pointing out that individuals, for example, abruptly perform actions, we can talk about a certain level of excitement.

Empathy is helpful in all areas of individual interaction, personal life, and the workplace (Petersen, 2021). As Hamilton (2018) points out, it contributes to obtaining the most productive work results and improved decision-making. This information can be connected to the specific scene chosen, as it shows that empathy in communication has positive outcomes for both sides.

New Resource on Listening and Empathy

One of the resources that provides an opportunity to expand knowledge about empathy and listening is “For greater empathy, improve your listening skills: Here’s how.” Therefore, this article provides several practical approaches that can help improve skills and communication quality in general. I learned that this ability allows one to improve the memory. The author claims that “deep listening occurs; it involves more parts of the brain and tends to embed topics more deeply, making them more accessible for recall later” (Brower, 2021, para. 6). Moreover, the knowledge that it is essential to manage yourself to improve empathic listening is valuable.
