The Types of Law Violations: Gender Effects

There have been numerous studies that examine different factors affecting the criminal acts. Most focus on racial and ethnical backgrounds (Wooldredge & Cochran, 2022); others inspect external factors such as upbringing, living conditions, education and so on. However, there is a considerable lack of studies that examine gender differences of the types of law violations. This paper is going to focus on this gap in the modern research and study the gender effects on criminal acts. The author believes that gender differences have profound effect on the types of law violations and further research should prove it.

Gender effects have been studied only from a victim perspective and majority of the research is centered on the domestic violence. For example, Laskey et al. (2019) solely research gender effects of intimate partner violence victimisation, leaving other types of criminal acts unstudied. Moreover, when the research of law violations comes to include gender effects, it merely covers sexual and domestic abuse. However, this author believes that gender could have a profound effect on types of law violations. For example, according to the American Law Library (2022), there has always been a stark difference between female and male crime categories. Females have lower arrest rates than males for virtually all crime categories except prostitution. In serious crime types, females usually have lower representation than males (American Law Library, 2022). Women’s acts of violence, compared to those of men, result in fewer and less serious injuries (American Law Library, 2022). This demonstrates the vast difference between female and male acts of crime, as well as the gender effects on the types of committed crimes.

The present study is going to examine differences between crimes committed by men and women, and find a correlation that will enable to see the gender effects on the types of crimes. Therefore, this study attempts to cover the gap in current research and find explanations to the possible correlations. By focusing on gender differences, the author attempts to identify a deeper perspective on law violations. Specifically, what effect gender might have on the types of law violations, the research field that has not been previously covered.
